I am looking to start building fishing rods but I am having a tough time finding more than one source for blanks. Does anyone have names (or websites) of suppliers they have used and are satisfied with?

A good catalog that I found is the one that Cabela's has. They have their own blanks and also blanks by Loomis & St. Croix. Good Luck!

Most rod manufacturers sell blanks. Berkley, St.Croix, G.Loomis, Fenwick, Scientific Angler. Get on the web and e-mail them for their catalogues and price sheets. Most of them have discounts for volume purchases. I would visit them, if you have time, and get a really good idea about the each blank's characteristics you like/dislike, etc. All have a plethora of styles and designs that you need to see/feel first hand in order to make a good choice.

Hi Duane,
I have been building rods for about 8 years and got started from a very good friend of mine. His company is called Interior Alaska Custom Built Rods and his name is Cedric Knuckey. He is based out of Minneapolis now. You can reach him at 1-888-414-RODS. He carrys different brands of fly rods and spinning/casting rod blanks and can get most types your looking for including GLOOMIS. I have built many loomis from him. Also his suppliers are really fantastic and he has been building for about 25 years. Lots of good help and information. His email address is cknuckey@aol.com. Lots of fun building rods. Email if you need more info.

I have several companies that I deal with for parts. By far, the best in prices, and fantastic service is Custom Tackle Supply in Ten. Bob Mc Kamey and staff will answer ALL your questions and give suggestions on rod building.
They have a paper catalog and on-line catalog.
They can be reached at phn 931-684-6164 FAX 931-684-1755 email customtackle@United.Net
I use Mud Hole Rod Supply as a backup and for unusual items that Custom might not have.

Wild River Distributing is by far the most econimical place to get your rod supplies. They get all St.Croix 2nds and you can order firsts too. Their phone number is 651-433-2217. I have been building rods for years, most of the time the 2nds from there have a little spine bend so they wont go into the high speed wrapping machines...no big deal. good luck

If there is no one to show you the ropes of building your own rod, then I would recommend picking up a videotape or an instructional book.
As mentioned previously, Cabela's TackleCraft catalog has a selection of them.
If you are in the Chicago area, I would highly recommend giving Dan's Tackle Service a call, (773) 276-5562. He will sit down with you and show you how to build a rod and show you a few shortcuts that can save you time and money.

Dale Clemens used to have a catalogue loaded with rod building supplies including blanks, cork, seats, finishes, guides, etc. as well as winding jigs, butt wraps, paint, dryers, threads and all kinds of customizing tools. If you can find the Dale Clemens Rod Building instruction book, I'm sure you can get the address for placing orders. One of the nice things about Dale Clemens is that their customer service is outstanding and you can call and they'll advise you or walk you through rough spots. Good luck and have fun.
