The little acorn nuts used to retain the line releases on Off Shore planer boards have a tendency to loosen due to vibration, (just driving down the road) I replaced these nuts with stainless steel self-locking nuts, you can't loosen these with your fingers. No more lost line releases. Save yourself some heartache.

The little acorn nuts work just fine. It's just one of those little details I pay attention to when setting up for the day on the water. What does it take to check them? Five seconds? I don't think that constitutes heartache...;-)

Just my thoughts.

P.S. Heartache is watching these poor guys down in that Russian Sub...waiting to die, if they are not rescued soon. Their families must be going thru ##### too. I wish them luck.

Hi Juls, the little acorn nut was not there to check and neither was the release and I didn't discover this until out on the water and wanting to use the planer. Only a minor heartache, no doubt, but it won't happen again. I could not find the release either. When/where it came off is just a mystery. I only posted it a second time because of how the header came out on the original, words got lopped off. Off Shore sent me two releases, now I have a spare. Once again, good customer service which deserves praise. Hey...cheers!

Problem noted. I always carry a spare set(s) of releases just because I like redundant systems and I'm kinda clumsy in the boat...I step on stuff..like boards and releases! The releases WILL break if you stomp on them in a careless moment. I think everyone should carry an extra set of reds and blacks as well as extra springs depending on your application for the day. Here's to buried boards! Good Luck.

Maybe somebody ripped them off while you weren't looking???? I've never had one fall off.

OR-16's are the red releases. They come in packs of two. I'm not sure off hand how much they are, but you can call Jeanie at Off Shore at(517)738-5600, she will be happy to let you know. I don't see the acorn nuts on the list, so if you ask nicely, they might just throw them in!

The black releases are the OR-14's.

Hope this helps some,

Juls

Hey Mike,

I'm thinking someone helped themselves to your releases. That stinks. Good luck.

Hello,

I have heard a few problems about the Nuts that hold the releases in place on the tow arm of the Planer Board. These problems seem most to be caused by lack of tightening or vibration from rough sees or towing on-shore.

The (OR-16) Red releases as well as the (OR-12) Black releases are available through OffShore Tackle's Web site (see below) or by calling OffShore Direct.

If there is any problem further with the Releases feel free to contact me.

Thank you,

Hey Eyemadman, I'm sure you can get the releases you want direct from Off Shore and they are very prompt at getting them in the mail. My little solution, the stainless steel self-locking nuts with nylon inserts cost me all of forty cents. They will not loosen no matter how much vibration. I don't think I got ripped off because the left planer had everything intact. It was just one of those things, but one of those things that I found a solution for and which will now not ever happen again. Like the one poster above...I can see it now...I'll probably step on one of 'em and be mad as a hornet at myself. Hey, I'm human. Things happen. In steel mill parlance they use another expression but I won't repeat that here. Good luck to all. It is only $.40 :)

I would like to correct my previous post.

The Black planer/snap weight releases are OR-14's, not 12's.
