I have been using Fireline for a couple of seasons now and found it to be great for sensitivity and strength. But lately for jigging I have been going back to mono I find that I miss alot of fish when jigging with fireline. I haven't tried Spiderwire yet but maybe I will give it a try. Anyone have anny comments out there on Fireline or Spiderwire?

Fireline is decent, but tends to frey fairly easy. I'd stay away from spiderwire as the "sheath" of the lines tends to fall apart, especially when jigging in amongst the rocks. The best I have found for Jigging is a superline calles Power Pro by Innovative Textiles. I rarely freys and casts extremely well. As for sensitivity, Power Pro is as good as it gets. Good luck-George

I jig with Fireline almost exclusively, and no, I'm not sponsored by them. I especially like it in depths of 10' or more. In some rare applications, in close and shallow, I'll stick with mono for its stretch. It helps me miss less fish. As for the Fireline it is important to use a quick-action rod. I almost exclusively use 6.5' medium-light to get some "give" at the end of the rod to make up for the lack of stretch, and that has all but eliminated the extra misses that I had at the beginning. I didn't say I don't miss fish, just not any more than with mono. With a shorter, or stiffer rod I also have drop problems. Personal opinion, and certainly not scientific fact, but I think the fish feel me as quickly as I feel them with shorter, stiffer rods and drop it quicker than I can set it. Just my thoughts.

Spiderwire 2/10 is the best line I've ever used for jigging. Cuts through weeds nicely too when rippi'n weeds. Actually I have it on all my spinning and bait cast reels.
I think your (me also) setting the hook to fast because you feel em way before you would with mono. Just my theory.

I'd say stick to the Fireline, nothing as it appears in the collective minds of those who have replied is tops. But if you really want to go to a mono still I'd suggest using Trilene's SensiThin. I use it for trout fishing cause they get spooked (in my mind) easier then walleyes. Its amazingly sensitive, is a low stretch line, and has a pretty low diameter. SpiderWire is no good. Stay away from it. If you use it a lot you better buy a lot of extra rod tips cause they are going to wear through them and the more you fish the faster you'll wear through them.

My partner just tried a spool of Spider wire. I use Fireline. I can't believe the number of times he has had to re-tie due to abrasion or break-offs with that junk. Fishing side by side, using the same methods, I can tell you that the Fireline is a much better product. I have also seen the fraying problems that others have reported for the lighter weight Fireline but I use the heavier 20# stuff and have not had that problem. I fish in muddy/murky water 90% of the time so that is not an issue with me. Just talked to a guide who recommended the Power-Pro line. Said it was round instead of flat and therefore held knots better at the smaller diameters you might be using. Give us a report on whatever you decide to use. Whether it's good stuff or bad and what you do or don't like about it. Good luck.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-20-00 AT 05:13AM (CST)[p]I agree with your opinion about the eye's dropping the bait as soon as they feel you with a stiffer rod. I took a Mitchell super light ice fishing rod, broke off the handle and wired and taped it to the end of an old 6' medium heavy Garcia rod I had laying around. It don't look like much, but it sure works well for jigging up to 1/4 oz. jigs(best with 1/8 oz.). I can really tell the difference. I can see and feel the lightest "strike" without telegraphing it to the fish.

I've used Fireline for years but tried Power-Pro this year on my trolling reels. I find it much more user-friendly than Fireline. As for Spiderwire..you couldn't pay me to use the stuff! Good Fishing, Sluggo

Sluggo... would you be more specific as to how PowerPro is more user friendly than Fireline. Thanks

As mentioned in a previous post..Power-pro is more round than Fireline. I believe they use a three braid process. A standard polomar knot works well with it and it doesn't "slip" out of releases as easily. Fireline seems a bit stiffer to me and seems to have more memory. Hope this helps..Good Fishing, Sluggo
