For exceptional durability at very modest price, you can beat Shakespeare Ugly Stiks. Graphite and other composite rods are mostly too stiff and will break too easily if bumped against a gunwale or other hard surface. I got 20 good years of service out of Ugly Stiks on Lake Michigan used for planer boards, downriggers, and dipseys. The downrigger version is made with wooden handles to further add life to the rod (no rod holder damage). The models for trolling are BW, their abbreviation for big water.

Meant to write "can't beat"...but, you probably knew that.
bob,
i used the shimano tdr 1804 heavy action rod.
great for pulling dipsy and inline boards
Bob, depending on the speed that you are going to be trolling for the musky, if it is less than 3 miles an hour for musky forget about the same rod for both species. i do fish for both and i can tell you first hand that at slower speeds the dipsy rods will let about 75% of the muskies get off. you may hear different but i average at least 50 muskie a year, and i do know what i am talking about, they are just not stiff enough to slide the lure and set the hook, at a faster speed they may be alright, but i like a stiffer rod, and just let off the drag a little. if you have any questions give me a call and i will be glad to answer anything that i can. 1-888-855-9032 ask for denny. good luck and good fishin.
