I would take the fact that there aren't many 2wd SUV's in your area into consideration. It will probably be hard to sell when the time comes. I think it's only about $1500 more for 4wd, but you will more than make up for it when you sell it.

I just purchased a 99 Explorer with the single overhead cam V6. i was told by a number of people that this engine would pull up to 4000 lbs wiht no problem. I have made a couple of trips with my 17' Aluminum deep V and 100 hp. It does well. i don't think I have power to spare but does the job. Without the boat I am getting about 18mpg.
Not sure with boat yet.
Depending on what boat you are pulling this may be an option.
I was going to buy a Tahoe but could save a big chunk of money with an Explorer. Mileage was a big issue with me.
Yes you do gain a lot of towing power ans stability with the larger SUV's.
Good luck

Most dealers do not stock the 2 WD Tahoes, they will order them for you. More like $2,000-$2500 difference between 4WD & 2WD. I'm on my second Tahoe and have never had a problem with ramps from Kentucy to Minnesota. Major advantages of 2WD, better ride, better gas mileage, lower purchase price, and alot less to fix when something goes wrong with the 4 WD. Reason there isn't alot of them on used car lots is because people are keeping them and when they do trade, the used ones are bought quickly. Many people have found out that 4 WD is not the big deal it't been made out to be.
I would never own a tow vehicle w/o 4X4. I fish Northerns Wis and Minnesota lakes and have, at least 3 times, had to engage the 4X4 because of a combination of a shallow ramp (where I've had to back the tow vehicle's rear wheels well into the water), and slippery, slimey covered submerged ramp. If I wasn't able to have engaged the 4X4, I would have had to have been pulled oput by another vehicle to get the boat out.
Just my 2 cents,
Steve
