I think it's time for a new locator. I am not interrested in the locator/motor combination, but and innterrested in the pinpoint locators. I have been told that they are one of the best. Any opinions?
Thanks
Lawrence

There are so many things that are nice about the Pinpoint units it's hard to list them all. Just the fact that as features change, you can have your unit upgraded to the newest version, makes them a great buy. It's frustrating to spend a bunch of $$ on a good sonar just to have it be second tier after just one year, no so with the Pinpoint. Target seperation, detail and ease of use are also some key features. Call 1 800 474-7550 and ask them for a video and some information. Last and most important, Pinpoint has the best customer service on the planet if you need them.
GO PINPOINT!

I currently run the 7520. It is a very nice unit. I have had some problems getting it to read bottom at high speed, but each time I talked to Pin Point they were more than happy to help me. They gave me the upgrades for nothing this last time. The unit now works like a charm. I would recommend it.

Reelman,

I've been having the lost bottom situation also at speed. What solution did they suggest? I've tried moving the position of the transducer. I've just not gotten around to calling them yet.

Thanks, Kurt

I have used the 7520 and 7800 pinpoints on the Mississippi for this entire year. The 7520 in flasher mode is great. It gives you immediate feedback on what's happening to the bottom and especially useful when positioning your boat on wingdams. Also, combined with a GPS it really helps in getting "spot on the spot" locations while trolling three ways. The 7800 is less useful because it does not have flasher mode, but when synced with the 7520 it gives great coverage.

Recommendation: buy the 7520, you'll never go back to other electronics.

For high speed, you have to be sure the TD is always in the water. Trimmed out you might just have a few inches of boat. On shoot through hull transducers this can be a problem in fast boats.
Transome mounts require flush or slightly forward facing TD's. Just a matter of getting "clean" water over the TD and no air bubbles.

I figured it just required some tuning. I'm going to first try adjusting the angle first, then perhaps lowering it just a bit. Thanks.

I'm on my second year on the 7820. It is awesome when it works properly. Last year my first two units failed the first time I set the scale to 100 feet or more--a new unit was sent promptly each time but it was a bummer having my new unit out of action. Also, the screen gets very dark on warm days in direct sunlight. Last year I was told a fix was forthcoming in the fall--didn't happen. However, this spring for about 70 bucks I could get the new, higher temp glass AND System 7 (the new op system). I didn't care about System 7 but I did want a functional unit on sunny days. I bought this unit expecting the 2 year warranty to be honored but I guess the screen doesn't count. The company was sold after I bought the 7820--I think to Motorguide/Zebco. I wouldn't think of going on the water without backup electronics in the boat. Maybe it's only the 7820 that has this problem.

I currently own a Pinpoint 7520 and it works pretty good. I used to own a 350A and I liked it better. I think the screen is better and it displays the fish much better. Pinpoint does pick up fish and display them but I think the 350A was a little clearer. The other think I dislike about my pinpoint is when in zoom you have to have a slit screen either 50/50 or 75/25. I sure others will disagree but this is my opionion.

Go to www.lowrance.com. Click on "Meet the next of kin" and check out the LCX-15's. The monochrome model has 480 verticle pixels! If Lowrance got it right and this stuff works as advertised everything else is obsolete.
