I have used in-line planner boards for musky for a few years now and even with a musky it sometimes is tricky to tell whether a fish is on or not if the board doesn't head toward the back of the boat you have to read the board, my question is with walleye will you be able to tell if there is a fish on. I plan on trolling a river with several shallow spots which we longline over and catch fish but I wondering how many I'm spooking and have decided to try a planner board should I set it light enough to where it will release on a decent fish.
thanks

There are a lot more qualified than I to answer this question, but since it's gotten this far down without a hit I'll give my opinion.
You can set up your in-line boards either to release or to stay on the line. Check http://www.offshoretackle.com for specifics. Also, if you frequently can't detect if you've caught small fish or are dragging weeds, buy Off-Shore's planer boards and get the Tattle Flags. This modification to the flag tells you whether you've got a fish, weed, are bouncing bottom, etc.
OffShore really has a great and informative Web site and newsletter. I suggest reading through both and using their boards with tattle-flags.
Good luck!
Ive been useing the tattle flags and they work great the only thing is to drill small holes in the front of the board to better adjust the spring tension the deeper liped baits need more tention they only have 3 grooves in the boards and the old boards have no grooves to hook the spring onto
