I know, I know, "Not another Bearing Buddy post!" but here goes anyway. The Bearing Buddy website doesn't recommend checking bearings more than once every 5 years as long as you kept the bearing buddies full and the bearings and seals were new when the BB's were installed. What does everybody think about that? I have a '98 trailer with BB's installed when it was new. I have kept the BB's full and I have no grease leaking out the rear (of the hub). Do I need to re-pack or am I just wasting time and money with this dirty job? Or......is it cheap insurance to throw in some new bearings every few years?

Thanks for any information,

Joel B.

Yes it's a dirty job but where would you rather do it at home or on the side of the road out in the middle of nowhere? It's cheap insurence!
I have a 97 shorlander I'm in the prosess now doing mine, when i opened them up every thing looked real good. it's going to be a carefree summeras far as bearings go! good luck! mk

Hey Mark,

Thanks for the reply. Did you replace the bearings or just re-pack with new seals?

Thanks,

Joel B.

While you have the bearings out to re-lube, copy down the part numbers and go buy a spare set. You'll be glad you did if your'e ever out in the middle of no-where and one of the bearings fail.

I just finished re-packing my Bearing Buddies. It's cheap insurance and piece of mind for me.

I switched to an Aluminum Oxide Marine grease, so this meant and entire break down of the hub. The only thing I had to replace were the inner seals, since they had to be pulled to get at the inner bearing. Took me less than 2 hours and cost $15.

Just an FYI - If your grease is dirty or smell burnt, it's time for a change.
