View Full Version : Strongest? Blood knot or Double Uni
For tying mono to mono what is easiest as well as strongest? The old faithful blood knot or the back to back uni?

I use the back-to-back uni-knot. It works for mono-to-mono, mono-to-Fireline, and for different sized lines such as leaders. It has never failed me, and is easy to tie--even in a cold boat in high seas.

Both knots are basically the same from the standpoint of strength but they will lose strength if tied poorly or with to much friction. Chose the knot you tie the best and that will be the strongest. Good Luck , No Fish

IF YOU READ UP ON IT THE POLOMER KNOT IS THE EASIEST AND STRONGEST KNOT GOING WORKS ON ANY LINE

HANDS DOWN, the double uniknot is a better knot than the blood knot, especially if there is a line
diameter difference between the two lines. The greater the line diameter difference, the more the
blood knot will slip out. Never had that problem with a double uniknot.
If this applies to your situation, if you are attaching a mono leader to a mono main line, a slick, super easy and effective knot is a double surgeons loop.
Thanks everyone. Is there a diagram of the double surgeons knot anywhere? I usually test the knots to see what percent of line strength they are and the tests I did tonight showed the Palomar and double uni to be 100%.(the line broke in it's main body away from the knots) Also for my trifocals, the blood knot's cross hole is a bit small. Thanks again. (I also found a diagram showing using the uni for snelling but haven't tested it out yet.)

I use both knots, and as long as they are properly tied I really can't tell a difference. I have been tying blood knots for my fly-fishing leaders for 20 years.

The double surgeon's knot is simply a square knot with an extra throw on each side. It's great for tying sutures where you are having a big problem with the knot slipping, but I can't imagine it's as strong as either a uni or a blood.

You fish for flies? What size hooks? How do you fillet them?

Yes you'll find those knots will not really be the best for braid to mono leaders, they are best sutied for mono to mono.
The above suggestions are good ones. An educated guess would say 99% of people use a bimini twist to double their braid mainline. From there you have a wider range of knots for the leader. I use the Yucatan as it's fast, strong and has a low profile.
Cheers.

There's more than a few places to see how a knot is tied, this one shows in diagram and video

Mac, here are animations for tying fishing knots: http://www.animatedknots.com/uniknot/index.php
Click on "Fishing index" and you'll see all the ones they illustrate. I find the uni- to uni- easier to tie than the nail knot or blood knot. Just my bifocals and clumsy fingers probably. For leader to mainline connections the Double Surgeon's Knot (not the Surgeon's loop) works well. For any connection to a swivel, hook, snap, jig, etc., I only use a Palomar - quick, easy, strong.

The links the guys posted are probably helpful now but did we even have internet when this thread was started?????

some ppl. do and they stick catch fish. However many lures are fine tuned and do not impart the same action when you use a swivel. If the swivel is to large, and it doesn't have to be big, crankbaits will sink instead of rising to the surface. The only lure i'll use a swivel on is an inline spinner to prevent line twist.

Don't know if any of you guys watch or put any stock into fishing shows, but one I really like for the knots is North American Fisherman" with Steve Pennaz. They do a segment during each show where they put the best knots against each other in a head to head contest using the same variables of line, pressure, etc.
The best two knots for tying two lines together are the Uni-Uni knot and the Modified Albright. In the head to head contest, the Albright won but both are good. Here is the link to Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R_2xautA1U Shows the competition as well as how to tie.
For tying line directly to a hook, lure, etc. they also put several knots head-to-head and the best was the Homer Circle knot. Even better than my beloved Palomar! Here is the video:
http://www.fishingclub.com/video-tv/articletype/articleview/articleid/2632/categoryid/1104/knot-wars-2011--episode-4-champ-vs-homer-circle-knot
If you watch, let me know what you think as I've tried to start using these new knots. There are several of your favorite knots (including snell knots) shown in competition over the past 4 years if you want to look them up: http://www.fishingclub.com/video-tv/knot-wars.aspx

Do yourself a favor and learn this knot:
Seaguar Knot
http://www.seaguar.com/seaguar-community/knot-guide.htm (http://www.seaguar.com/seaguar-community/seaguar-knot.htm)
That step-by-step will guide you through the knot (it's as easy as a palomar), and there is a video to accompany.
Seaguar invented the fluorocarbon leader, and this knot was designed to attach leader to mainline which was your initial question, correct?
In a matter of minutes of learning this knot can be tied in the dark during gale force winds at gunpoint in a matter of ten seconds.
I've tried the double UNI, the Albright, Surgeon's, and blood knot, but the Seaguar wins for strength and speed no contest.
Mac,
Try each knot on 1000 different combinations of line, using a calibrated scale and post your results.
Inquiring minds would like to know.

For line joints, I really don't care if I have tag ends that stick out a bit.
So, the only knot that I ever use is a double surgeons knot.
It is a simple overhand knot with the tag ends brought through the open loop several times. It takes about 1 1/2 seconds to tie in any weather and wind.
When you make the loop large and the tag ends long, it can be tied in the dark with your eyes closed in 40 mph winds as -20 degrees.
Tighten the knot - and snip the tag ends and you are done.
Good luck
REW
p.s.
I don't fish in the conditions listed above, so it is an exaggerated example.
But bottom line, the double surgeons knot is about as easy a knot to tie as possible.
By the way, the use of a palamor knot is really not a suitable knot for joining lines, but it is the only knot that I use when tying on jigs and hooks, Very easy and fool proof and very strong.

The palomar is one of the strongest, and not to mention one of the easier ones to tie. I use the palomar all the time when I got out, people say that the palomar is only superior up to only about 17lb test, but I don't believe that, I used 20-25lb mono or flouro all the time using the palomar with no problem.

Both great knots and agree with Gunga go with the knot that is easier to tie considering the conditions.

Exactly... For those recommending palomar, explain how you join two lines?!?
I like the uni to uni...simple and seems to work fine.

I feel confident in the Uni to Uni because I havent had any problems with it and I don't know how to tie a blood knot.

I've always used the trilene knot. I tie hooks, jigs, snaps, join lines, with just the trilene knot. Never had one come undone, never had one break.
