I few years ago there was a lot of talk about a new method to fillet fish called unzippering your fish. Does anyone out there use this method? I thought at the time it was a gimmick or something to sell videos and not really a way to get all the bones out of a northern or other fish. Thanks

Wasn't that some contraption that was only a pole on a board? Wasn't it only for trout? you had to cut the head off and hook the spine on the end of the pole the shove it down and wala! the spine and all of the rib bones came out.

The zippering technique is just an added step to the traditional manner of filleting fish . It removes the lateral line along with the epilateral bones and a lot of the offensive flavor . I do it to all of the eyes I fillet because it gets rid of those pesky bones . I don't think it will work on Northern Pike .

LOL! You're thinking of the Wunder Boner! We've laughed at that display at the local tackle shop every time we walk by it. It probably works great, but what a name!

Yeah, that's what I thought too Jack. We just make quick incision on both sides of the "mud vein" when filleting and "zip" (pull) it off.

There are different methods with different fish using the unzip your fish technique. I have been doing it for a while. It works great. The only complaint is that you seem to waste a little meat on salmon and trout so I don't use it with them anymore.
