Take a look at Jason Smith's post (and the replies) on the Muskie Board -- "The Ultimate Boat"

Frankly, I think Tuffys are over priced, but they are very fine boats. I've fished with a couple walleye pros and guides out of Tuffy boats and found them more than adequate on big water and rough water.

It may help to know what model boat you're interested in and how and where you like to fish.I'm also considering a Tuffy so I pay close attention to the replies. My boat shopping has narrowed my choices down to a Tuffy Osprey 1760C or a Yarcraft Mille Lacs 1785SC.

OCC,
I too an interested in these boats. I've seen the Yarcraft but not the Tuffy 17 footer. My question to you is what is the lay out of the Tuffy. If you go to there web site and call up either the 17 ft osprey or renegade series, the same picture of the same boat appears! Also have you priced the Tuffy? Only one Tuffy dealer in MI and that makes me a little nerveouse to say the least! I've rode in the esox series boat and liked it a lot. Well made boat. Thanks ps I want a deep V boat not the esox series

The 1760 Renegade and the 1760 Osprey are the same hull with different interiors. The renegade specs do picture the osprey at the bottom but the top graphic accurately reflects the layout of the renegade.

If you have any questions call Steve Worrall at 800-359-4416.

I had a '94 Renegade 1800 w/ a 120hp Johnson and good SS prop. Excellent hole shot and killer top end. I kept up with much higher HP boats. Finding the right prop added a great deal to performance.

The boat handled well in all conditions and fished great. We used to refer to the livewell as "the Shedd" as in Shedd Aquarium of Chicago. The baitwell is bigger than many boat's livewell. The boat was a dream. You could chip golf balls off the front platform. The 90" beam made for a super steady boat. Don't know about Osprey's, but the Renegade is a hardcore fishing machine. Few creature comforts, but it does everything extremely well. Good fit & finish. No spider cracks anywhere on the boat. Drew plenty of compliments and questions at the ramp and on the water.

I loved my Tuffy - until it got mulched by a guy who ran a red light at 7:00am on a Saturday morning(I think OOC said he passed the carnage at Darrel Rd & 176 back on Dec 4th). (The guy's insurance took care of me after a bit of a tussle).

I will buy another Tuffy. I'm getting by w/ a '90 Lund Rebel Tiller until we finish renovating our house.

Are you looking at new or used boats? What other makes/models are you considering? $$$$$? E-mail me with specific questions if you'd like.

I run a 1700T Rengade. It is the deep-v. The lay out is on the port side, a 24inch bait well and a 60inch livewell. the right side is rod storage. There is dry storage and battery storage in the bow. Great big water boat, if you have any questions feel free to e-mail me...Ben Remer

Bought my first Tuffy (1760 Osprey Tiller) last spring and love it. It handles rough water very well and has a lot of room..........gc

I was told by a fellow fisherman that the osprey boats ran wet.

pab,the osprey has the console moved a little farther forword then the Renegade but the front casting deck is silll plenty big.The renegade also has raised storage compartments on the sides, ala bass boat.More storage but much less floor space in the rear.Kneel to net instead of stand and net. OOC

Zach,
Looking at the diagrams on the web site, the Renegade 1800 only shows 3 seat bases. Is this accurate? Also the diagram of the osprey 1760 show 4 bases behind the front casting platform and the picture only shows 3 bases. By the way my catalog should be on the way! LOL Sorry for the questions. Thanks for the info.

I fish a lot of big water and ran Yar-craft boats for a number of years and was happy with the performance overall but made the switch to Tuffy last year. I was impressed with the new osprey series. I ended up purchasing the 1990dc model with a 200 opti. I am very happy with the layout, ride, performance. No problems. I have been in five footers with it and did not get wet. P.S. add a couple Glyde Ryde suspensions and you can really sail through the big ones. Feel free to email me personally or call Steve Worrall at Tuffy. Ask for a tour of the factory.

Name a 17 1/2 footer that's "dryer".

Ed Schoenecker ran his 1760 on Day 2 of the Bay de Noc MWC tournament over to Big Bay from Gladstone on a day when the 20 footers took a real beating. Ask anyone who was there and most will tell you that a 17 footer wouldn't have made it.

With a jerk at the helm of any boat you will get wet.

With the addition of the Esox Deep-V sereis this year, Tuffy has made it even easier for a multispeicies fisherman to get into the boat that best suits him. They've taken their proven Osprey hulls and and their 18ft Renegade hull and added a totally new interior giving you even more choices.
One thing that hasn't been mention yet, and that's Tuffy's commitment to customer staisfaction. If you check the archives, you'll find the Tuffy company to be one of the best in the industry to keeping their customers happy after the sale. The Tuffy company has been said to be an example other boat companies should follow.

Never had to kneel to net a fish in my 1800 Renegade whether on the front deck or down in the cockpit.... For what it's worth, the way the bow cap comes over, there was room to store my net up underneath there. Out of the sun/out of the way/always ready/ and stayed put at 70 mph down the highway!! Yeeeehaa - what a boat!
Taking advantage of the same bow cap configuration, I could store a slew of rigged rods down each side of the boat - again, out of the sun, out of the way and secure at high speeds!

Good post Lonnie. I have ridden with Glyde Ryders at Saginaw, Erie and Green Bay and havent been in any boat that could keep all the water 100% off my fragile old body when quartering the wind.

I have a ospry 1760sc and fish alot of big water.I always feel safe in my boat and love it. No boats are dry but some boats are wet and Tuffy isn't one of them! I get lots of complements on my boat and am very happy with the fishability of it. Trolls great, drifts slow and quiet and is very stable in big waves. I wish I had the money to buy two Tuffy's!!

It's high time someone like b&w boats does a comparison test to find out the driest boat. These things could be measured if they put a little thought into it. End the hearsay!

I'm on my second one now, had an older Rampage which was nice stable musky rig. This fall I fell in to a 1760 Osprey and it is the most enjoyable rig to fish out of. Eats Leech Lake right up. And I really do believe that they are the "driest" boat out there. It handles the 'heavy' water with no problem han rides smooth. If it wasn't for work I'd be in it every day. My boss was so impressed by it that he went out and ordered a 2001 20 tiller.
Once a Tuffy owner it's tuff to own anything else. You won't won't be disapointed!
Diz

what hearsay?!!!
10-19-2000, 09:44 PM
Not a single Tuffy owner has said that their boat runs wet - the only one who suggested it "heard it from another fisherman". Not exactly an authority on the subject. Find a Tuffy owner who thinks his boat runs wet and then we'll have a discussion.

Glad to aee you came over to the best boats out there - Tuffy.
Just kidding friend.
I had an older Rampage 160XT for 7 years and would still have it if it wasn't for a personal situation forcing me to sell it last year. Ran it with a 50hp Merc and couldn't have been happier with a tiller boat of that class.
I've visiting the factory, talked with many of the people, other owners including resorters who use them as rental and guide boats and have never met a unhappy user.
Will I buy another? YOU BET! (Just as soon as I can afford it.)

I drove the all new 1990 DS Osprey yesterday at Mr. Marine in Fond du Lac, WI. The rig was set up with a slidemaster set back plate, and a 225 Mercury Opti Max,turning a 25" wheel at 5300 rpm. It is a missle! Trimmed all the way down the boat ran 55, and at half trim, went from 62 to 74 mph (light load, no kicker or troll motor, or gear, but full livewells) like a shot. The boat was alittle squirrely at top end, a symptom of having no gear or equipment load in the rig, but was very drivable. I am certain this thing will run well into the upper 60's fully rigged, and behaves great in rough water. Kyle Morgan, Jay Jannay, and the Merc high performance folks drove it as well, as did Leon Luker and Dave Krause, and the reports are identical from everyone. I have one on order( an Esox Deep V model) and can't wait! Zach, you will love this thing!

I've been running Tuffy boats for 4 years now. My current boat is the 2000 Osprey 1990. I've ridden in other boats and could have bought one of them. I chose Tuffy not only because it is a very good boat, but because Tuffy treats you right.

I own a 1990 Osprey side console and can't say enough about it. It handles the rough water like a dream, has a great topend, and is backed by some great people. The floor plan and amenities of the boat are actually laid out and designed by fisherman. Tuffy calls its pro staff to ameeting every winter. At this meeting each person brings with them drawings of their ideal dream boat. After several hours of reviewing them they are submitted to engineering for feasability and the next years boats are born. Granted there are things that we as fisherman want that just can't be done. My point is that here is a company that has a genuine intererst in it's dealers and owners. Call 1-800-359-4416 and ask for Steve Worrall[ Nat'l sales manager] he can give you the name of the nearest dealer and even line up a ride in one of the "tuff team' boats.
AS far as that dry ride issue I'am very satisfied with the Tuffy hull. When your quartering 4 to 5 foot waves on a really icky day. In my experince you best have your rain suit on no matter what name is on the boat-end of story.

Hey Fisherman,

Nofish here. Why don't you register your name next time you log in, and then no one can post as you again. :-)

Have fun..........R
