I was program chairman for several years for our Lake Michigan trout and salmon club. It was usually possible to book tackle and manufacturer reps at little or no cost -- many are quite good. We also had good luck with DNR personnel, but you need to know who can and cannot pull off such an event. Sea Grant was a great source of speakers, no axes to grind, no political agenda, just good information. Some of the walleye circuit guys are very good with certain audiences, just as some of the LM charter captains were excellent. Rely on good references from people in your area who know. You can pay $500 and get a fine speaker, but you can also get an outstanding speaker for little more than expense money.
We also called on public officials in regard to policy matters and the like. In an election year I'd wait on this till after November 7. You'll find a variety of speaker's bureaus if you take a look (check links and websites on the net -- there's a lot there -- but, a reference from someone you know is always good insurance). Good luck.
