View Full Version : Picking a gift--driftbags, etc.
Don't fish much but want to give gifts to a number of people who do. Is a driftbag a good gift? How do I pick the best one? What about other ideas for unusual gifts?

Outdoor gifts for outdoor people are great -- as are gift certificates. If you want to buy a drift bag, or downrigger(s), or
anchor(s), or tent, or. . .well, you get the picture. . .then buy something you think the person will like at a place where he or she can return it for a larger or smaller one, if they prefer.
Happy Holidays!

Sure, a driftbag would make a great gift. Hard to beat the Wave Tamer (driftbag.com). If anybody uses leeches at all, the Leech Tamer also would make a great gift.
Other great gift items would be safety stuff, such as a first aid kit, a flare kit, etc. Also, a fisherman can never have too many stainless steel needle nose pliers, side cutters, etc.
I'm sure others will have suggestions as well.

Great idea! In my opinion there is only one driftbag, the Wave Tamer. The website is www.driftbag.com. Of the half dozen bags I have purchased over the years, the Wave Tamer actually works. The rest seem to work great as mini tarps covering up the junk on my garage shelf.

I would consider a drift bag (sock) a good gift only if the person receiving it said they wanted/needed one. It's not like a rod or tackle box. It's targetted toward a specific method of fishing. Don't assume they will use it. If you do purchase one, be aware that the length of the boat usually determines the size of the drift bag.

The days of putting on "old clothes" to go fishing or hunting are over. Outdoor clothing has become specialized and much more efficient and functional. A much safer bet than tackle or equipment would be good outdoor clothing -- check any of the bigger stores; Gander Mountain, Cabelas, etc., and you'll find all sorts of gift apparel outdoor folks would be delighted to receive. Happy shopping.

I vote for the gift certifcate. My fishing buddies and I are pretty fussy. If it takes us a long time to figure out exactly what we want, it'll be darn near impossible for someone else to guess right.

gift certificate along with a Cabela's catalog.
easy shopping, very much appreceated. able to purchase what is needed. merry christmas!
My wife finally gave up and I get all gift certificates to the local Scheels. I would suggest the local sporting goods stores first and then maybe Cabelas. It is always nice to keep the $$$$ in town and you also get to build a relation ship with the local experts.

At the top of the list, in my annual letter to Santa Claus, is a TR-1.

A drift sock is a great idea if the person receiving it has a boat to use it from. I Live in Wisconsin and fish out of my boat for about 8 months out of the year. The Mississippi River is home water. I have often wished that the family and relatives who were going to buy me a gift on my birthday, christmas or whatever would all get together and put there money in a hat to buy me a gift certificate for Gander Mountain, Scheels, Stamina, Netcraft, Bass Pro or wherever. Instead of recieving cloths that don't fit me or equipment that I don't need and having to return these items ( worse yet not being able to return them). I could take this money, add some of my own to it and get something that I have wanted for a long time but did not want to spend the money on for whatever reason. Use your best judgement and it will work out fine.
