Go to Galyans and look at the Lacrosse gamemaster 1300. 1300 grams of insulation and light enough to walk in.
Good luck

MN-You probably already know this but in case you don't or for those that don't. I biggest mistake I see people make is they buy a 150.00 or more pair of Gortex hunting boots with gobs of thinsulate and then wear cotton socks. Cotton absorbs sweat and now you have wet socks next to your skin sucking the heat from them. Wear a pair of polypropylene socks next to you skin or just a good blend sock with poly and wool. May not be a complete cure but will definately make a big difference. Hope this helps.

What you need for sitting in a stand is a pair of insulated over-the-boot sock ("stadium boots" or whatever they're called). They slip over your boots like a pair of mittens over gloves. They are not for walking, but great for sitting in a stand.

For my coldest weather deer hunting (ND resident), I skip the thinsulate/GoreTex boots and don't even consider using my Mickey Mouse boots. Start with a pair of polypropylene socks to wick the moisture away from your skin. Cover those with a pair of thick wool socks (they won't itch, they aren't touching your feet). Over those, a pair of cheap tennis shoes that are large enough to go over those wool socks, but tight enough to provide a little support and feel of the ground. Now for the all important insulating dead air space--a pair of ordinary rubber overshoes that will give your tennis shoes a 1/2" layer of air. Yup, the overshoes are "too big". It works, even at 30 degrees below zero, and the system is light enough to walk in, unlike Mickey Mouse boots. If your feet feel like they are getting hot, just open the tops of the overshoes and let some of the heat and humidity out. My GoreTex/thinsulate boots are used for chilly weather, and my Mickey Mouse boots are only used for ice fishing.
I got a pair of Sorel Chieftains. I have,nt hunted with them but my feet don,t get cold on the ice.

I also have a pair of Sorel Chieftains. I wear them on the ice, in goose pits, and in tree stands when needed. My feet have never been cold in them. As others have said, if your feet sweat as mine do, it is terribly important to "wick" that away. I always wear a pair of polypropelene beneath a layer of heavy wool socks. I only wear these in the most extreme cold. Otherwise I wear a pair of Danner boots that are waterproof with 800gr of thinsulate. With the above sock combo, my feet stay warm a long time.
I have a pair of mucklucks that I purchased when I lived in Ely, MN. They are the warmest things made on earth. They are made by Steiger Mucklucks. These are the same footware the Will Steiger and the crew wore to the north pole on their dog sleds. They are super comfortable also.
I stand hunt deer by International Falls, I would only recommend Lacrosse Ice Kings. about $130 at Mills Fleet Farm. Not easy to walk in but you wouldn't be cold!

Tennis shoes and a good pair of battery-heated socks...bring lots of extra batteries. hahaha.
:->
I bought a pair of Irish Setters (10", 900 gram Thinsolate) from Burger Brothers in 1996 and have used them for everything from duck, pheasant & deer hunting, ice fishing and snowmobiling to general winter wear without regret. Lightweight, compfortable and warm.
Ditto the remarks about the socks. Very important - poly liner with good wool outer - makes all the difference in the cold.

For real cold hunting you need two types of boots. One for stand hunting and one for walking type hunting. I use Icekings for stand hunting and then walk back to camp or carry with me in a backpack my Rocky hunting boots for stalking type hunting.
I also have the overshoes like Phil T talks about and have to say, you wouldn't believe it but they are as warm as many cold weather boots. I use mine a lot also. They're great for scent too by not leaving a strong scent trail like leather boots will.
Use the poly sock and wool over that like the others suggest. Not cotton. We had an arctic expedition guy talk once at our work place and his saying was "cotton Kills" no matter where you wear it on your body.

I use Sorel "Glaciers". Great for hunting and ice fishing. Wear two pairs of socks as the other posters suggested. You can't go wrong.
Good luck: Frank

LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-00 AT 08:28PM (CST)[p]Your "Cotton Kills" is accurate. I am a SAR tech.III, and a Wilderness EMT. In our organization during summer operations we discourage cotton, and during winter operations one doesn't even leave town with it. Wool and or Poly are all that is authorized.
The best way to go is layering, using the three Ws. Wick, Warm, Wind. First layer Wicks moisture away from the skin, second layer is the warm/insulation layer, and the outside is the wind break layer. Play it safe and have fun.

I realize that I didn't mention boots, but the other folks have that covered well.

Sorels are Canadian made and among the finest cold weather boots in the world. They set the standard for cold weather wear. They are made by the Kaufman Company out of Southern Ontario. They manufacture lots of other footwear for specialised use all over the world. Visit their website at www.kaufman.ca. Their new gear for this year is awesome.
