The scenario: You may only use one technique for catching wallys the rest of your life.

What would you choose, not based on production, but just on enjoyment? Trolling plugs? Jigging? Rigging? Scuba diving with a harpoon gun?

Probably a topic best saved for a long winter day, but I probably wouldn't remember it then.

I cast my vote for vertical/pitching jigs ... or wait ... throwing cranks ... or ...

Since 'enjoyment' goes hand-in-glove with success and 'production'.....

..... rigging on sand near windswept boulder (reef or shoreline) structure.

Not based on production....jig on 4 lb test. Just something about feeling that first little tap tap tap.

Based on production...sprawler.

rigging would be the way to go. you can do it all with a few hooks, some line, a few weights and some barrel swivels.... put a split shot on or near the hook and it's like jigging. using a three way rig or double barreled rig and you can troll spinners, cranks, or plain snells at just about any depth. these rigs work good behind planer boards also. back to basics and you've got a lindy rig or split shot rig. if you have a little imagination you can handle just about any situation. it's cheap, it's productive, and a lot of fun.

Rigging...I love to feel the "take".

I've got to list two -- 1) rigging, since it gives satisfaction when you do connect; and 2) slip-bobber, since this presentation, too, requires some savvy.

Only one technique? Sounds like a bad dream!
I guess if I had to pick one it would be...?? Oh, I know, It would be slip corkin at dusk with a lighted float, with a big daddy whisky sour in one hand and a smoke in the other while listening to the loons call one another. Oh Yeeaah! Paints a pretty picture don't it?

Whew, this IS a tough one...

But then I think of when I enjoy it the most.

I love to row troll. Pulling Hot-N-Tots is a favorite past-time.
The woods, the reflections on the still water. Get a breeze blowing the right way and you hardly have to put the oars in the water. At night, its the complete lack of anything (unless BE is screaming like a girl at the frogs agian)that gets me going. Can't beat a lake with a no-motors rule. I tape glowsticks to the ends of my rods and they get thumping along in a way the can lull you to sleep untill BANG!! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....FISH ON!!!

Well-it would have to be jiggin'. I love to be in total control of the jig. I get satisfaction out of working it. To drop it in places and then pop it out. Snagged-then unsnagged. Weeds--no-weeds. Whether or not I catch fish- I enjoy this style the most and, therefore, I do it the most often.

Trollin' two boards with the "Reelman" tattle flag kit, and trollin' leadcore or just longlines in the middle.

Give me fish in relatively shallow water so I can forgo the weights and I'm really in tall cotton!

Plus this way I get to buy lots of cranks!! You can never have too many.... lol.

Wading or shorecasting at night with cranks. Proofs in the pudding, best chance for jumbos. Cant beat the excitement of the whole scene. Dont need beer for this one!

SUPERTROLLING !! This was an easy choice for me. Catch more and bigger fish trolling than any other method I usually employ. Hot-N-Tots and Deep Jr.'s are my favorite lures of choice. I change colors, depths, and locations; but I could troll all day and most times do.

My love for pitching jigs at night in the shallows is hard to put into words. But there is just something about hand lining that is hard to describe until you've done it. Pulling in a big fish hand over hand - It will put a smile on your face that almost hurts. HUTCH

But, if I must...................RIGGING has to be #1, love the take!

Sprawling comes second.

Most of the reservoirs I fish here in Kansas. Jiging has the nod. Did pretty good this year pulling spinners when jigging didn't produce. Still have a lot of techniques to try.

If you call trolling one technique, I'll take it. If I have to get more specific, I'd say pulling cranks. If I had to pick one lure, It'd be Reef Runners, no question.

Hmmm,
A interesting topic.

I'd personally would have to go with Trolling Spinners (Harness') with good planning devices, and weights. It's semi-product based, but not on a specific product.

I love this style of fishing, it's relaxing, fun, and can pull huge fish out of certain areas when all other methods fail.

1. Gil nets over shallow wind swept reefs at night during the spawn.

2. Trap nets in deep water in migration paths

Hey, We're just trying to keep our American neighbours in Walleye for their dinners out. You guys just cannot get enough of that Walleye. Most of the Walleye netted in Ontario ends up in American stomachs.

Jigging ofcourse!! You catch them anytime of the year spring, summer, fall and of course winter! Kinda hard to troll when there is 30" of ice on your favorite lake!

Big jigging spoons under the hard water! There is nothing like the rush of a big 'eye almost takeing the jig stick out of your hand! Always warm in a portable ice house, radio on softly, no wind, no sun, no rain, no boat control neccesary, it doesn't get better! Once you do this with success you will crave it all year long!!! Can't wait 'til winter!!!

Hey Gang.

Great topic. I have hemmed and hawwed on this one since the day it was posted. I had to pick jigging. Despite the size of the piggies when tossing cranks and wading at night(got an article about that on my pro page), or when they are smacking the same sticks during the day.

As I say, tosing really light jigs, on light tackle is the way I would pick. Shallow water to deep, casting jigs and verticle jigging is my method. And, no matter how much fun a big eye is with a stickbait in its kisser on baitcasting gear, I'll take the big pigs on jigs, with 6/2 Firteline anytime!

Have fun.....R

To me, there is no finer art than jigging. So many situations to learn and when you figure it out it's like heaven to feel ole' goldy suck that jig in. Ever changing, never boring. Uh oh.....my wrist is starting to twitch again! Can't wait for tomorrow!

The most fun I have had is lindy rigging the canadian side of Rainy Lake in mid-July. Crawlers and leeches in 18-30' for those tap-tap-tap golden eye's!!! Last year 6 of us caught and released 164 fish in 8 hours, and I was lucky enough to take a 25.5 and 26.5 off of one point within 10 minutes of each other. Although this is nothing to brag about compared to say Lake Erie (yes that is a faint "whine" you heard) it as enjoyable time on the water as I have found!!!!! Xplorer

Hey RMB,

Me too! I can hardly explain the thrill of a nine plus, sucking in a jig that you barely feel, but you know she is not fooling anyone! I also hope everyone here get's the chance to feel a piggie smashing around in the shallows with a 1/16 oz jig smacked home on the other end of a 6 foot medium light rod......

Gotta feel that foor yourself! Man, I gotta go fishin, the drool is messing up my keyboard!

Have fun......R

Fish of choice, store bought variety, is Cod, Haddock and Pollock. If I do buy walleye in the restaurant, I figure the one Fillet I order evet two to three years is not going to kill any fishery. I usually order beef in the restaurant anyway. I would obtain my own as I do with fish, but do not know where there is a beef cow hunting season.
