Fishing Leech for the opener. Any points better than others? How about Walker bay? Fished Mille Lacs on opener for many years. Am sick of releasing nice eye's to be speared later!

This year might be different but I have always done better on opener on lakes further south. Leech is usually better by 2nd weekend and better still on the third. The structure around Pelican Island is generally good early in the season, red rocks, the rock pile, etc. Also have had success around Bear Island and Submarine. Talk to Roy at Huddles Resort. He can generally head you the right direction based on weather and prevailing wind patterns. Definitely better scenery at Leech than Mille Lacs - Have fun!

Walker Bay is slow during early season, altho it holds big fish. Both Sucker and Portage Bays warm more quickly extending as they do to the north. Try around Goose Island at south end of Sucker and to the north off 1st and 2nd Duck Points. Plus the info in the posts above. Good luck -- lots of room on Leech for all.
If I get there, I'll monitor Ch 5 -- not sure yet where I'll open this year.

Hi Jig Spoon,
Another spot you might want to try is Five Mile Point. Action can be hot on 5 mi. early. Actually fish can be found shallow all the way from the river coming out from Federal Dam to 5 mile point. I'll be on Winnie but will most likely visit Leech early opening week. Catch A Big One! - Tom
