Hi,

I am looking into buying a fish finder, and would like your advice on different brands, how much to spend, what features to look for etc.
Thanks!
James

you really have to do your homework these days. Most of the sonar companys have vastly improved technology . the pros know whats what, but their advice may lean towards their sponsor, with little regard to which one is best for your fishing circumstance.
---i bought an x-85 thinking it was the best, it is good, but you know i think it has too much power for the realitively shallow water i fish. Raytheon has immensely improved their fresh water sonar, making it more user friendly to the regular fisherman, and used by the pro who won green bay(but heck he fished a hole in the river to win it)and then there is Bottom line, sworn to be the best by someof the best.
---if you can, fish with other walley fisherman that are set up, go to the "get togethers",read up on it, maybey buy a year old unit from one of pros on this sites want ads-you will save 40% for a great unit-try to get a warrenty that is transferable.
good luck

For starters go to the Lowrance.com site to help you understand a bit about the basic functions. In-Fisherman has had some fantastic articles in the past regarding the techical aspects of sonars as well. Numerous pro's have posted articles on their web pages as that may be helpfull. I have found that you normally get what you pay for. Buy the best you can afford. Go to boat shows over the winter and talk it up at your local shops that carry the products.
You can learn a lot of subtle differences when the units are side by side on the demo rack. Take your time and enjoy the learning experience and you will end up with a unit that suits your style
Enjoy,

P.S. I currently run all Lowrance products, but there is lots of other good products out there.

Been following this board for years and there seems to be more good things mentioned about the Eagle/lowrance products than the other LCD units. I have an older Eagle unit that just keeps going and going.
If your interested in flashers I have been using two Zercom flashers for years and have never had a moments trouble with either of them. They are my current favorites. Simplicity at its finest.
Good luck.
