Thanks to everyone that responded to my post a couple weeks ago while I was still shopping. I pick up my new truck tonight. Here is what I ended up with: new 2000 Ford F250 Super Duty 4x4 shift on the fly CREW cab, short box 156 inch wheelbase, PowerStroke Diesel, Automatic Transmission with Overdrive, 3.73 limited slip axle. Trailer Tow and Camper Package, 8800# GVWR package, Off Road Package.
This will be my first diesel / heavy duty truck. Current truck is 1/2 ton V8 4x4.
Looking for suggestions on break in - ie how many miles should I wait before towing, how soon should I change all fluids (oil, transmission, transfer case, axle, etc.) I'm towing a 9000 pound boat/trailer. I will not be doing a lot of towing. Most of my miles will be highway in northern Ohio. I have always changed oil every 3000 miles. Thoughts on synthetic fluids? I've used regular oil in the past - wondering if I should go to synthetic - but was used to 5 quarts, not the 14 that this beast will take.
Thanks again,
Steve

I picked up an exact copy of what you have back in October and have not had any regrets. You'll love the truck. Not intending to take "hits" from Walleye Central but alot of your questions have already been asked and answered on this page, www.ford-diesel.com.

Steve, I have the a 99 Crew cab 4x4 diesel with the same rear end. Your going to love your truck. I know I love mine. I stayed with regular oil, but I change it every 3000 miles. Just follow your maintance booklet, you shouldn't have any problems. Griz
Sorry Too Hear That!

I have seen 3 different Fords sitting at launch ramps DEAD! I feel for you.
The break in? It will break in time.
Not being bias, just a fact. Ford still has a long way to go with their diesel to compare to another motor being used currently by another mfg.

Steve,
Congrats on the new beast! Stick with regular oil..I use Shell Rotella in mine. Walmart or sams club has good price on 6/1 gallon bottles in box. Synthetic would eat ya up in cash. I change mine pretty religously and the filter.
You might want to consider synthetic (amsoil?) in you trany though. I'm thinking of using it in mine next time i change it. Listen to dkooser and check out that website he mentioned. its awesome for ford dieselheads. Be sure to read the manual regarding the coolant additive to keep the "ph" in balance.

I was wondering what you would have to pay for a truck like that. I am also in the market for a new truck.
Thanks

All,
Thanks to everyone that replied. Walleye Central is GREAT for more than just walleyes. I did think about waiting for the new GMC Duramax / Allison transmission, but decided having a boat that I couldn't pull with my own truck until September/October was unacceptable.
The web sites referenced above and in the "Boats and Motors" thread are great!
$$ - Sticker was $39,400 Lariat package with just about every option you could get. I took a beating on my old truck (97 dodge 1/2 ton that had 98000 miles). After the trade, I figure I paid $35,200 plus tax. Biggest challenge was finding the truck I wanted in stock. Demand for these seems to be more than supply. One thing I learned over the last couple weeks is you are more likely to get a better "deal" from a smaller dealer - IF THEY HAVE WHAT YOU WANT ON THEIR LOT. I stopped at a couple of the volume dealers thinking I could get a better price based on their volume. I got the feeling they could care less if they got my business. I then started shopping for total package including service/convenience, etc. Also - if you decide to order one, you'll get a 2001 and likely wait up to 6 months.
Thanks again,
Steve Carlson
