I learned last winter that I had to license my portable ice fishing shelter if I want to use it on Minnesota ice (screwy law, but that's another issue). Anyone got a good idea as to how to ID the shelter without ruining the canvas?

I need to put my driver's lic. numbers on the shelter, but I don't want to punch the fabric or paint on it. Any help? Thanks.

I laminated a card with the information on it, punched a hole, and then used a nylon lock strap to attatch it to the zipper. Works for me!

I second the Velcro. Attach it when you want to.

Along the same lines, I would like to put reflectors on my canvas shack. I was almost run down by a snowmobile last year. I tried reflective tape, but it didn't hold up. Any suggestions?

The velcro idea sounds great. Will put something together and give that a try -- and, yes, I think I'll also fashion some kind of reflectors. We don't get too many, but we get some snow machine runners who think they're at Indianapolis in May.

Cisco,

If you go to a "Minnesota Fabrics", "Jo-Ann Fabrics" or some large fabric store you can get sticky-back velcro up to 2 inches wide and yards long if you want. The glue on the back of REAL VELCRO is made by 3M, I believe, and is pretty tough stuff. I haven't had any failures with it so far.

Lund Dude - you can use this stuff to stick to the shelter and to the back of automotive reflectors and paste them when you need them.

Take your portable to a canvas shop and have them sew on a 4"x 8" long piece of see through plastic vinyl (same stuff they use for the windows). I think it cost me a whole $10.00. Then take a piece of white tagboard, cardboard, or what ever, cut to fit, print your #'s in bold magic marker, and slide it right in. As far as your annual license card. A large safty pin is all you need.

Very good suggestions, all. Thanks much. I hate to be illegal in Minnesota again (I still can't believe portables have to be licensed). Good fishing -- the cold of the last three days has put skim ice on the bays and shallows in my area. Won't be long now.
