Off Huron on Wed. we set up our typical Dipsy spread at the depths that have been productive. After a slow start we raised the Dipsys to roughly 1/2 the original drop lengths and on the line, well ahead of the Dipsys was this accumulation of green slimmy stuff. Looked like algea or something. The Zercom LPG 2000 that shows thermoclines easily, did not indicate anything noticable. Fish were marking at all depths, but the biters were high. It may have been happenstance, but I just wondered if anyone knew what may be going on. I can't immagine that the Zercom wouldn't show us the scum line if it were a turn-over situation, but at the some time, I have no other explanation.
PS We got our fish but to go to cranks to get em. The fish were very neutral until after 3:30, then that fired up a little. Best depth seemed to be 28 - 30' of water.
What were you just explaining to me the other night Jim? About how slime lines were indicative of convergant currents and such. Although, what you told me, exactly, was that the "floating" slime lines were indicators.
A thought crossed my mind....
Could it be, that you were on a current line and the slime was simply below the surface?
I am probably way off base! I'm curious to find out the anser to this one..;-)

Is slimy green blob that almost resembles snot? If it's what I'm thinking of, it's a real small algae, and it is probably only in the top few feet of the water column, so maybe the zercom doesn't see it, and the slime slides down the line to whatever stops it first, and piles up on the line.

Jim: Since it is to cold for a blue green algae bloom the only other thing I can think of is spinny water fleas. We would get them a lot in the colder waters of Lake MI and Ontario so the temp of Erie now could be about right for them here too?
Just a thought.

Your green slime blob that resembles snot is actually Al Gore going for a swim!
As ussual, I didn't explain myself all that well. This green slimy stuff must have been at a particular depth (say 18' down). It wasn't BZs or spinny water fleas. It did collect on the guides when the line was brought through them, but primarily it turned the line a darker color. Thanks for the thoughts. I bet someone will know exactly what I'm talking about.

there is a common filamentous green algae that grows in
lake erie...you see it all over rocks etc...its the slime
that makes them slippery...i thinks its called cladophera
(cladophera glomerata is scientific name)...
at a certain temp begins to die...as it does
it gets smashed up by wave action etc...and can form
a greenish brown scum like you describe...that might
be what you were seeing...where it collects or settles
would be a function of wind/current/water temp etc...
I can't even give you the surface temp. for certain. Probably around 50 degrees . There has been a somewhat prolonged period of fairly calm winds. The stuff was a brownish green. To this point I think you've got the most plausable answer. Thanks

I agree on this with the temp dropping below 50 and with that temp. That is why I asked on temp. The last reading on the lake last night was 56 on shore 57 offshore. from the charts. My experience as turnover hits that residue starts collecting in layers , from the rocks, weeds , even baitfish that are decomposing. May be a normal year and the ice isnt to far off.
