I just received my Pinpoint system positioning system and I am going to mount the system myself. Are there any tricks I should know about before I get started? I am using the 7500 and 7520 displays and the necessary cabling to network it all together. I have mounted Minkota motors on my boat so I have some idea what to do but I would like to get started off on the right foot with this system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the same boat (good choice of words) as I got my system Thursday. The boys at pinpoint are real helpful. I'm in the process of mounting the motor and am using a piece of 1 1/4 inch pvc pipe mounted in the bracket to get the perpendiculars from without having to wrestle the motor. I leveled the boat first and everything seems to be going OK. In the place in the manual where it says use a 50amp inline fuse, the fellow at Pinpoint said 40 amp is OK if you have a 12v 0r 24v system. If you discover problems or short cuts, let me know. I'm off to the hardware store.
Gook Luck! Looks like a great product.

The Pinpoint system is real simple to install. My only advice would be to ignore the rubber mounting toggles that come with the system and get yourself some good stainless bolts and nylock nuts and through bolt it to the bow.

I came to that conclusion also. Don't want $1500 worth of motor held on with anything less than 1/4 inch bolts and nylon center nuts. Where did you find 40 amp inline fuses? 30 amp seems to be the max anyone carries.

Have you thought about the quick disconnect adapter plate that Cabela's has for this motor? I had one on my Minkota auto pilot and it was so easy to remove the complete motor and mount. I dont like to trailer the boat with the trolling motor mounted because it shakes the dickens out of them and also I don't need to get a custom cover made to fit over the trolling motor. With the Minkota mount one quick release pin and the motor came off. I just ordered one for the Pinpoint so next week I should know if I like it as well as the other one I had.

How's the installation coming Russ? I got my motor bolted on and the perpendicular came out great! I intend to ask the Pinpoint people about possible motor damage from dust and vibration while traveling on trailer. I wish they had made the power cable to the motor longer as it is a foot short of the posts. At 25 cents a foot or less they sure have economized on electrical cable lengths. It's cold and windy with a chance of snow today so I guess I'll hook up the display to a lawn mower battery and use the simulator for practice.

I am currently having problems blowing the 40 amp and was advised to go with the 50 and would advise you to do the same. Haven't had it on the water yet with the 50 amp but hopefully Friday. Another reply here to my post said he recommended the 50 amp and has not had a problem since he went to the 50 amp

Are you blowing 40 amp fuses while using it, or on initial hook up? Think I'll put in 50 amp fuse holder and try both. Blowing fuses is usually a sign of something not right somewhere.

I would suggest that you go with the rubber cushions, plus nylon locking nuts and washers on the backside. That way you get the advantages of the rubber cushion (very nice -- to help isolate vibration and shock) plus you get the security of the fender washers and nylon locking nuts on the backside of the deck to insure that you don't lose the motor or have the bolts loosen.

I added these a couple of years ago, after nearly losing my motor on a big wave.

No problems since, and am very glad to have the cushions to help take up the wave surges etc. that shorten the life of a motor.

Take care

Just to clarify a point,
The nylon locking nuts that I refer to in the previous post are stainless steel nuts (no rust - very secure) with a nylon insert in them to insure that they don't loosen.

Take care

Consider installing a plug for the power cable. This fascilitates the removal of the motor
when necessary. It's more work , but has saved my butt more than once...
