Just kicking it back up. Usually I can find some fish at first ice where I left off boat fishing in late fall, but I'm not the ice fishing authority here.

Irish,

I am NOT the expert on ice fishing but it has been my limited experience that the 'eyes hang for a short while in their Fall locations at first ice. If the ice holds and begins to thicken, they move and you have to search for them if you don't know their previous wintering areas. Most years they return to "generally" the same locations.

If the ice doesn't hold they aren't anxious to move. But, in any case, they will follow their forage and it will do well to do some study in the type of, and the habitats of their forage to better understand the 'eyes movement.

Iam a guide in Northern WI and yes alot of fish will be be in there transition areas yet,But when Iam talking first ice I mean 2to 3 inches--be careful and know what your doing. In alot lakes here in northern Wi,shallow weed flats on the north end of the Lakes are the best at first ice.Ive got 30 fish from 13-24inches so far and I got out three during gun hunting, best times for me are 5pm-7pm and 10pm to12am.The big girls dont turn on for me until mid DEC.8to10lbers-please let the big fish go they are full of eggs and thats your future your killing. And no Iam not talking Erie,Bago,Millacs small Northern MN and WI lakes.
