Dear Friends,
I'm looking for some fishing advice/tips on an upcoming trip to Vancouver in mid March of 2000. I'd like to fly out one day early and enjoy the outdoors up that way.
Any good ideas for fishing would be appreciated. It appears there are some ocean charters and inland trout fishing. I'll be flying so I can't bring much gear.
Please forward me any good charters, lodges, etc that might cater to a one or two day outing. I'm pretty open to species and method, though I'm a poor fly fisherman. It would be great to find some salmon available by traditional rod and reel.
Thanks in advance.

Check with Fred's Custom Tackle in Chilliwack, BC. They have guide trips and also might be able to supply tackle. Mid March may be good for steelhead on the Chilliwack/Vedder river, but check with them. Their shop is very good. Also, I believe there is a guide service that operates close to Whistler BC. I forgot the name, but a little web browsing should find it. Good luck, and enjoy! Very scenic country.

Hey Todd. Why don't you hook up with Fred's and go sturgeon fishing on the Fraser for a day. It is an absolute blast! It is not uncommon to catch 5 or more in a day and some will be huge (100 lbs is a little one!). Fred's is definately the place to start your search. If you like to use little corky's as bait floats(and spin n' glows), their selection of them will amaze you. Cascade charters also offers sturgeon fishing too. Why don't you stop over in Alberta for a little ice fishing action? I will try find Fred's phone number. Hope this helps, Chris.

I went about 12 years ago, I think? And stayed a week. I fished out on the inlets for Chinook and Coho. Then came back to Vancouver for the Worlds Fair. I partied for three straight nights. Vancouver has a ton of beutiful women and great bars. I made a very bad choice in guides, so I am afraid I can't help you there. There are a bunch of charters that operate out of the Victoria area on Vancouver Island. The Barkley Sound area is famous for big Chinooks. Since you are going in March, most of the rivers won't have anything running up river at that time of the year. So you will probably have to go into the salt to catch Salman.

"Most of the rivers wont have anything in them in March,".............how about the biggest winter run steelhead of the year!!! This is when the big non-hatchery fish spawn. Good Luck

If you want to fish from a boat, get a guide. If you want to wader fish look for the other guys in waders. They are not feeding in the river, so you have to piss them off to strike. Loud crankbaits against the current. The fish hold in the deeper pools during the day, and move at night. Water clarity and level is crucial.

I thought it was salmon fishing that he was interested in. What are some of the good rivers in that area for steelhead? I have been there twice, but only in the summer.

Neal,
I'm pretty interested in any species. On trips like this I just like to do something fun and get out for some "local" fishing. I've had fun doing charter boats, downtown rivers, private access to rivers, etc.
I just want to have fun and catch some fish, see some scenery, have a good time. Then on to work while I'm there.....
Thanks again to all!

The Vedder/Chilliwack (same river-two names) is the most popular and I believe the Harrison also gets fish. A little more travel will take you to the Thompson with it's legendary fall run of huge steelies. Also believe that the Squamish River towards Whistler gets a steelhead run.
