Do we get a plastic license like we did last year, in addition to the paper, or just an adhesive-backed one??

I got mine a few weeks ago and they told me all I get is the sticker. No more tiles or cards. The guy at the counter said I should stick it to the window. I almost climbed over the counter and slapped him. I am looking for ideas on good display locations that won't shread or melt away.

Ya know, these cards were a collectors item as were the duck stamps. Sad to see it all go away.

No Plastic. Only get the paper "Stick On" tag this year.

Just stick it to the window, 'eh?? Yeah, that'll work for about a day!!

So I assume the sticker must be attached to the house. I think I still have the plastic card from last year still on the zipper...Maybe it can be secured to it. I guess I'll figure it out tonight after I pick it up, unless you still want me to come over and fix those christmas lights!

At $11 a pop, I've now spent 1/3rd of what it cost me to buy my portable SnoBoat Shelter in Wis some 12 years ago. I don't mind my fair share of taxes, and I don't balk at license fees (I normally get half a dozen state fishing licenses plus Ontario in a typical year). BUT, there is no more justification for having to license a portable fish house than to put another license on a car or pickup if you drive it on the ice.

I stuck my license on the SnoBoat label above the window on an end door flap. I seemed to adhere pretty well. Incidentally, non-residents are supposed to pop for some $30 for the privilege of putting a portable on ice for a day or part of a day.

Read a feature story a couple weeks ago about a guy who just had TruckMate build him a custom (approx $30,000) ice house he will also use as a summer cottage -- his license: $11 -- same as a portable.

It is a problum!!!! I found a large over size luggage tag holder and put in that. Works good and it has some substance to it. Does not fall off, swings a little, HA HA. If it can stay on the bags with the rough handling airlines, then whats a little wind. Good luck Fishing....Outdoor News advises 9 to 12 of ice on Lake of the Woods. Let go!!!! Kaz

Dave the sticker is water proof it will not be destroyed by moisture. I ordered a new house from Canvas Craft and I won't have a wooden door on my shack no more so I think I will obtain a plastic ID case that teachers and doctors wear with there ID and access badge in it and fold the license over the old plastic card and insert into holder. Then clip it to your door flap or anywhere you would like near the door throw it on the dash of the truck when not using it.You can use the same card year after year it will just get thicker with each license folded over it.

See ya all in Feb.

Are you guys kidding each other or I'm I missing something here? Does the Minnesota DNR really Charge 11 dollars for a fishing shanty permit?

cisco
12-15-2000, 04:02 AM
The actual fee is $10, but there's a vendor's service charge of $1, so, YES, Minnesota does charge $11 to put a portable ice fishing shelter on the frozen water. Evidently, it would (or could) apply if you dragged a big cardboard box onto the ice to fish from.

If you want a plastic card type lic, fold the paper over an old credit card or the like, wala

Ya Know, If we as "Minnesotan's" have to purchase a license for our shanties, why do we have to go through a big ordeal to find something to keep it from getting destroyed? I think this is absolute boloney! The Dnr could and should come up with a better system than this! I don't have any problem buying a fishhouse license, but having to go through a big ruckus to keep the license intact, is stupid! A non-distructable plastic card seem's a little more applicable. I'm ashamed that Minnesota officials cannot come up with a better system than this one!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-00 AT 01:52PM (CST)[p]Boy, EE, did you hit that one on the head and one of my biggest craw in the claw issues. I am so disappointed by this new system, I can't begin to tell you, but I will. What's worse is that all the people I have talked with are so complacent about it and are not really doing much to improve or change it.

What do you all think about this whole system? Do you feel that your money has been well spent? It may have improved the DNR's record keeping, but it sure left the sportsman/women in the dust.

One of the posts said that these new licenses are water-proof. Baloney! They are supposed to be, but I have had to replace two that were washed and all the type disappeared. The deer tags were a joke, the confusion over the storage and handling of the fishing license was vague and the lack of correct placement of the required duck stamp are all issues indicative of the poor foresight and planning the DNR extended prior to implementation of the ELS system.

The fish house license will not survive a winter. In one month there will be a posting(s) on here about what to do about the faded license or the ticket someone got for improper display of that license.

The DNR needs to address these issues. We pay more in taxes then any other state for our right to hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors and we should get a little better product for our money then what is currently offered. IMHO.

Whew...OK, I'll step down now. Sorry.

Eric, You've got nothin' to be sorry about! The Dnr. are the ones who should be sorry! One good thing has come from this issue: I haven't had to use any propane in my shack yet, cause the steam coming from my ears has been suffice! I do hope they change a few things next year, or they will lose many sportsmen and woman's dollars. (including mua!) Have you been up to Ottertail lately? Just been icin' out on Big Pine once over Thanksgiving weekend. We picked up a couple, but the ice was too thin to get to some of my favorite location's. The ice should be thick enough to drive on by now though, huh! Hopefully we'll get the houses out this weekend! Good luck, and may the fish be with you! EE

I agree 100% with what you and the rest have said about the license system. The DNR is somewhat responsible for the changes, but the changes were first started in the lawmakers offices at the capital. These guys are the ones that should hear the complaints. I know that these types of changes go on and it doesn't seem like anyone cares about it, well that is what the officials hope for. Remember, we are "Minnesota Nice"....so we really have set ourselves up for this kind of stuff. As sports enthusiasts in the state, we need to sound off to the people that need to hear it. Call your state lawmakers, believe it or not, it does work. I did last spring when these crappy note tags were first issued as regular licenses, and got the yatta yatta from the DNR, but I would bet that if more would do the same thing they would listen a little closer.

I would love to see it changed.

Sad state of affairs, I have not had a chance to venture up to the cabin since before deer season started. I have to head up to my brother's in Perham and get my sleds out pretty quick. He was running them last weekend with the kids. They went to Head lake and slammed the crappies. A few bonus eyes finished a nice day for them. He is trying to hit a different lake up there every day or so. With the most lakes per county then any other in the state, he might be pretty busy.

Sometimes it sucks to live in the cities.

When I received my first "stick on" licence - I was as angry as the other postings. However, I thought about it for a minute and realized that it is a reasonable and efficent way to issue licenses. I don't like it but -- no need to fight it.

I went into the garage and cut out a couple of pieces of aluminum -- about 16 gauge -- rounded the corners and drilled a couple of holes to screw onto the house.

Each year, I simply unscrew the plate - use a heat gun to take off the old licence -- reapply the new one, and screw back on.

If I need to use one on another house, I simply unscrew and move over temporarily.

If I were really concerned about the print coming off -- I don't -- I could put a layer of clear plastic over it.

No big deal -- once I got over being upset.
I also agree with the other postings, in that it is unreasonable to have to licence a portable.

However, I can be taught. On my first trip out a couple of years ago, I had two portables - for myself and for my friends. Since it was the first trip of the year -- it had slipped my mind that I had not renewed my licence. After a very successful night of fishing - I heard the clomp of foot steps in the snow about midnight. I lifted the door and saw the shine of a badge in the lantern light. I had instant recall that I had not licensed my houses for that year.

$80 later in fines -- I learned my lesson -- to always double check the status of the licence before bringing on the water. This also applies to the boat and trailer license as well.

Take care

REW

Hey guys it sounds like this is the first year with the new license for most of you. I had one last year and I stuck it to the outside of of my wooden door right to the plywood in the cold and it didn't fade or come off and I had a hard time removing it but it is very tuff and all came off. I just stuck the new one right over the same spot.
I haven't read the rules for display yet but last year when I got my license I didn't know what to do with it and the first time out a warden stopped me when I was just set up and was not fishing yet but he wanted to know where my license for the house was and I explained that I had it in my pocket but I didn't know how I was going to display it without destroying it he was real helpfull and told me it would stick real well to the wood and I put it on in front of him. No ticket or fine just real nice guy.

Hope this helps

Yes the tags stink. But the real issue here is why on gods great earth do we have to liscense a portable fish house? What a racket! The Dnr better start listening to sportsmen and women, after all, we do pay their bills. It wont be long and we will have to liscense a 5 gallon bucket to sit on.

i agree with bouncer boy, but what makes it even worst is that you need a sticker for your portable house and if your an out-of-stater you can't buy one anyway that's dum, so that means you dont go fishing in the state of minnesota, and they lose money while south dakota is happy to take the money from you guys from minnesota, thank for paying for alot of south dakota resources. fish on

I inadvertently discovered the reason Minnesota requires a license for portable ice fishing shelters -- my SnoBoat went airborne on me today (Sat -- gale winds).

I think it is a requirement that aircraft be licensed.

We bought a shelter license while visiting Minnesota last year. It cost us $19.00 for the shelter and $18.00 for a three day fishing license. Go figure.

REW, how can you accept this? In order to make the license usable, you had to spend an hour in the shop making a plate to display your license. I think that is unacceptable and arrogant on the DNR's part to assume that we all have the ability , time and desire to fix there snafus. $11 for the sticker and an hour to attach. Yeah!

A little forsight and they could have created a similar system on plasic cards. No sticky stuff. No one even had a pouch to put them if until a few months ago. Currently the stickers are all stuck together in a pack in my wallet. Anybody else have that? My fishing license, my duck license, my deer license and the extra license I got when I added pheasant. Two have been replaced when they got washed and the others are in the pack because I can't get them appart. I can't wait till the DNR asks for my license. I will hand him the gooy mess and bid him a good day!

Don't get me wrong, REW. I appreciate your insight more then most since I am a tinkerer myself. But you and everyone else did not pay for a license that required above normal tinkering to display it.

I cut the top of a cool whip containter to size, attached the license and took a paper punch, made a hole and a light piece of wire to attach it to the house. I have a couple different portable houses so I can move it back and forth depending on which I am using. I like the old system with the cards also, but do not think I will quit fishing because of the new. The state should equip the CO's with laptops for the trucks so they could access state files in case the weather fades the printing on them or if a guy forgot the wallet at home, along with his fishing license.

Well guys,
Be glad you don't live in Kansas. You would be paying a property tax on that Shanty. Since my boat is taxed as a dwelling I wonder what the shanty would be taxed as.

I had a licensing agent tell me that the receipt, if saved, could be used to prove you have a license and to issue a new one if the original was lost. Well the game warden told me different when I couldn't find my license. He wouldn't accept the receipt at all. I was really fuming at that point. For all we pay for licensing I would think that they should have computers just like the sheriff or state patrol.

Wis does not require portable ice shelter licenses, nor does Wis require boat trailer licenses on rigs under 3500 lbs -- BUT Wis does have a guy named Tommy Thompson. Something is always in the mix to spoil things.

Nah,
Can't Blame Al. It's all these Liberal & Republicans doing this. They seem to think that anyone who owns a boat is rich so they should pay a property tax on it. Can't get a tax break at all. We had a bill go through which would have eliminated or lowered property taxes on Boats but they also included aircraft and the public shot it down. BTW, Kansas is a Strongly Republican State. Sorry, that you all think I am a liberal Democrat, actually, I'm a conservative independent. I vote for the person I think would help me out the most. Unfortunately neither candidate was worth a crap and My candidate lost to GW in the Primaries.
