View Full Version : Good Fishing Mag's
Been out of the fish magazine scene for a few years, looking at In-Fisherman again. What do you folks think makes a good magazine? I like Mid-West Outdoors too, you get a lot of reading for the money with this one.

In the mag format I like North American Fisherman. In newsprint Outdoor News. Haven't subscribed to any of the "big three" in years.

Walleye Central Magazine...Walleye Insider...North American Fisherman, and I would say In-Fisherman, but everytime I order a years subscription I only get 1/2 of them. Either they are screwing it up at headquarters, or my mailman doesn't think a gal needs to read that..hahaha! I have let that one go for this year. Walleye Insider is better anyway.

What makes a good magazine.Hmmm...
I guess top notch info that's presented in a way that's interesting to read.I-F has the former, but some of their writers are boring.
I really enjoy good essays (ex. Gene Hill, Gierach, Stange at times). As a long time reader of fishing stuff I'm getting tired of just another basic how-to. Good essays are rare, but they are most likely to be found in Field and Stream. Field and Stream's problem is that their info is usually at too basic level.
Haven't read Outdoor Life in a few years, but it did have Patrick F. Mcmannus (funny!).
Have a couple of older Fishing Facts magazine. Informative? Yes. Interesting? No. Heard here they were no longer as good as before (bought out?).
Just some random thoughts.

Gotta second the North American Fishing. Really good articles on a wide range of species. I also like Field and Stream. Great stories and info for both land and water enthusiasts. I recently dropped the Walleye Insider and BASS because I get what I need from the other two without the exclusivity. Some may prefer the single subject mags. I like the mix.
2 cents!

For walleye reading my vote goes to "Walleye Insider", and for overall fishing "North American Fisherman". In both you have to wade through a lot of tournament crap, but the fishing articles are generally very good.

Sports Afield used to be quite good as well. Though now they've gone almost exclusively over to "non consumptive" pursuits like climbing, hiking, kayaking and basket weaving to, in the words of the new publisher, "better assess and meet the needs of today's progressive outdoor enthusiast." Apparently, fishing is losing favor in some arenas.
But there is hope in the form of Gray's Sporting Journal-- if indeed, it is essays you're after. It's a spendy publication at nearly $7 per issue, but it does some awfully nice stories, photos & artwork.

If you fish Lake Erie here is a recommnedation. 'Lake Erie Walleye' can be ordered at www.walleye.com It is printed 4 times a year with good Erie information.

Thanks for the suggestion. English magazine choice is limited around here, but I'll keep my eyes open for Gray's.
I read informative pieces too, but I don't really enjoy writing that's too dry.I like to learn, but some outdoor writers manage to make an interesting subject boring. After all, I read the magazines for the same reason I go fishing; enjoyment.

Hans;
without all that tourny "crap" there would'nt
be a Walleye insider. Where do think all new these techniques come from? Not to many guys going
to give up this kinda info.
So love them or not most all this new technology is because of professional tourny's
to give up this kind of info.

>Where do
>think all new these techniques
>come from?
Trouble is it doesn't matter if those techniques work or not, just matters what it pays to say they do.

Here in Michigan one of the best and most read outdoor magazines is Woods-N-Water News.
Easy to read and informative articles on hunting and fishing. Great magazine.
You can order this one too by emailing the editor directly at wnwnews@aol.com Mark the mail urgent!! His name is Tom.
Haven't seen NAF so I can't comment.
