I seem to remember something on this subject a couple years ago regarding using vegetable oil to keep the surface from freezing in an ice hole. Any info on this or any other method would be welcome. Thanks.

I have a good system to keep tipup holes open. I took 1/4" plywood and cut a hole cover that is the diameter of a 5 Gallon bucket. Cut a slot in the wood to slide the tipups into. Glue to the plywood a piece of "blueboard" insulation, paint the wood and you are set. You can also "sandwich" another piece of plywood on the other side of the insulation. Good Luck!
