I haven't tried a Strikemaster, but just about any fishfinder will work fine through ice when it's clear and clean. When it gets too much snow on top you might have trouble; you can try setting your transducer in a slight depression, then pouring water on top to get solid contact (finders usually work fine through slush; the air gaps in snow or bubbly ice can cause problems). Just bring along a canteen full of water and refill it when you drill some holes.

I have one and love it. I carry a plastic coke bottle with
windshild washer solvent in it. I find a clear spot of ice
and pour it on ice then set unit on that. Works great!
It has been several years since I have been around a polar vision or similar type device. They work very well for determining depths of water. Just squirt a little water on the surface of the ice and measure the depth of the ice. They're very handy for determining water depth. However, most depth finders used for ice fishing are expected to show bottom and structure, fish, and your bait. As I see it, the polar vision depth finder will give you a numerical reading of one item, usually the bottom. At best, you'll probably experience some confusion as to what the depth finder is actually telling you.

the only reason i am thinking about this particular unit is so i can find an exact place on a piece of structure before i drill so i dont have to waste so much time drilling holes my biggest question is will this unit work on ice that is in no way clear thanks again in advance
Skeeter, That windshield wiper fluid you are using is not good for the fish and it is probably illegal to be dumping into the water system. It may work good but its not good for our fishing waters.
