Every year I "experiment" with another crankbait. I'll define experiemnting as going out and buying $60-$80 worth of a crankabait that I don't already possess. As time has progressed, I notice that my new experiements are more successful than those of years gone by. So, is it because I've become a better fisherman over time and trial/error experiences or because the "new cranks" are so much better than the old ones?

It could be both.

The new cranks are very nice, some of them anyways. More effective with new colors, body shapes, actions, and various other add-ons.

Also you probably have gotten better with the time, patience, and effort. With time one gets better at what they are doing, and natural talent only excels this.

That's what I have seen from my experience.

ditto with the above post, but also a couple other things I think come into picture too. A big thing gained with every hour pullin cranks is the knowledge of the depth you need to be a what depth your at. The other is you become over time more experienced with what locations at what times on the lake to pull cranks. I tend to think that if you used some of your old cranks that have similar color and action you'd find nearly as much success. Take for instance shad raps. They basically haven't changed them much over the past what 10-15 years and my raps from 10 years ago still produce very well. Just keep pullin em and toss in an old one once in awhile.

Confidence is another factor. If you believe it's going to work it will spend more time in the water and not in the tackle box. I know when I started pulling cranks. If I did'nt have a walleye pretty quick I was digging for my jigs. ( Husky jerks have been super for me the last two years.)
