I am thinking of trying Lake Erie (Bass Islands) area for walleye and was wondering if anyone could give me a rundown on the ice conditions and where to fish. I have fished the area in the spring a couple of times, but most of my ice fishing for walleye has been done on the Saginaw river. With the current warm spell is the ice still safe??? What kind of wind condidtions do you have to watch out for?? Which areas are safe, etc. And where is a decent place to try?? Also, do most use 4-wheelers or is that too risky? By the way-- fished the Saginaw River on Sunday near the Zilwaukee bridge-- saw lots of anglers, but very few fish caught-- I have heard that the action has picked up somewhat this week, but it is still pretty slow-- best areas are near Wickes park (where the Titabawassee and Shiawassee come together to form the Saginaw).. Thank you in advance for any replies.

The way the temperatures and the winds have been , i would say to be safe, stay off, the ice is deminishing fast, and the currents will be eating the ice away fast, and the rain isn't going to help at all.call about the guides and ask them, or call rickards and ask them about the ice conditions. be safe whatever you do. no walleye is worth any life. good luck and good fishin.

Fished Erie last weekend, Catauba Park Landing, Lots of pressure cracks heading north towards Bass and everyone was "hairy" with piled up snow and water by each crossing, lots of current under the ice that will make ice chancey at best, wait for more cold weather and maybe a snowmobile would get you across the drifts and cracks better, otherwise its a loooong walk back to land. The bait store Don mentioned will tell you if its safe and they give good honest advice, also use the marine weather forcast because its always different than the one for inland, example: inland forecast last weekend was for 10-15 mile winds, but the marine cast was 25-35 Knots, guess what, gale force winds on Erie and two cheeseheads went home with their rods between their legs.... good fishing....
