Does anybody know what the conditons are on the River by Red Wing? How is the landing by the bridge? Is anybody catching any eyes or saugers? Are they hitting on jigs again? Believe it or not, I actually nailed the smallies last year in a little estuary that comes out into the river last March. Any info would be helpful. Thanks guys.

Did the dam thing yesterday. It was a very good day. Lots (I mean lots - dozens / hundreds) of fish caught in every boat (lots of boats too). Very few fish over 17 inches and lots around 12. The action made up for the size though. Even a few small sturgeons. Mostly sauger and saugeye in "the gorge" right below the dam (40-60 feet). Just head-up to the dam and drop a jig /minnow over the side - it's a no-brainer. Great fun for kids. My 10-year-old and I have made the trip several times this winter with the same results.

Good luck. Actually, luck is not needed - except for the weather - which was great too.

Went Tuesday. Kept 2 limits of nothing but "eyes" and all were 16-22". Threw back many that were 15-16", and only one fish that was smaller than 15".
Did not catch one sauger. Stayed clear of the dam and strictly fished downstream a ways. More work, but worth the efforts. All the rain should start bringin' em' up from Pepin though. Water temp. was 37 deg. If I weren't going trophy bass fishin' on Lake Okachobee in Florida this weekend I'd be there again for sure. Good luck and tight lines!

Where is the landing you go to? How deep are the fish? I'm a first timer in the river, anything I should know? I want to dig the boat out of the snow.. Thanks, Mike

The landing I use is across the bridge from RedWing on the sconny side. There is also a resort on the Wisc. side just upstream from there that has a pay landing and may be easier to use if it gets icy. The initial stretch of river upstream from there till you get to the main channel is fairly shallow. Use caution! You will not hit anything if you take it easy. There is a wing **** just a block upstream of the landing that is quite shallow (1-2'deep) and other than that watch for dead heads. Once you reach the main river channel you'll be free to zoom. There is a bait and tackle shop off the side of hyway 61 on the oposite side of the hyway from the Perkins on the North edge of town. They can fill you in on directions and info. as well. Good luck!

It's not that uncommon to get trout in the cold weather months. Goes to show how much the river has cleaned up.

Thanks for the info,do you need a sconny license or a MN license to fish the river, boat and personal license? Do you recommend jigs and minnow? Thanks Again. Email me if you don't want to give away your secrets. thanks, Mike

Nice day on the river, good catch. Why do you keep two limits? Why not keep the better eating 15" and let the others go to be pigs someday. Don't understand why people enjoy keeping limits. I'd rather report a day of catching 4 limits with all fished released. Just my thoughts.

Boat's in storage probably 'til April... is anyone fishing from shore anywhere? I'd make a day trip if it there's some good spots to work from shore. Use to fish Chamberlain SD from the shore in the early spring. Usually did just as well as if we hauled the boat.

I dont understand keeping 2 limits either....especially of bigger fish. I have not kept a fish since last november and the ones i do keep are of the smaller variety. Especially when many of the larger fish this time of year happen to be females. Pool 4 is a great fishery...lets all do our part to keep it that way.

Actually there were two of us fishing and I haven't had a good walleye feed since this fall. I do release any of my fish that are over 3-1/2 to 4 lbs, I don't feel it's a crime to keep some fish to eat once in a while though. Don't be so quick to judge! PS: I just came back from Lake Okichobee Florida and released a 9 lb bass. My buddy caught and kept a 13 lb bass though ...... can't blame him.....it's the biggest bass pulled from there in at least 5 years!

Read my reply above............Seeing as only two fish we caught were under 16" it wasn't like it was a hard decision.
