Last Saturday I was fishing in the cold and wind. I found a spot after 2 to 3 hours without a hit. I was able to maintain boat control with lots of wind. Did catch and release to the tune of 12 fish or so in less that 1 hour.
The next day I was back and the wind and rain was very bad. The place I wanted to go was 3 miles into the wind. When I got there boat control was a big problem. To shallow for wind sock, anker would not hold, finally I tied to a tree in the water. Started catching fish and when netting the second one I brought up TWO walleye's. After 2 or 3 more fish I did it again. This happened twice. Day of a life time. All the walleye's were males in the 19'' range.
Like it says on the home page, "It must have been yesterday".
Sounds like a great day! We fished in a tournament last Sunday and one of the boats that was trolling hooked a decent fish. When the guy netted the fish there were two fish in the net, the one on the hook and another that was following. The one on the hook went 18 1/2" and the follower was 23 3/4". Both fish fell into the protected slot and were released. We fish 3-way rigs and it is not un-common for us to hook a fish on both the dropper and the trailer at the same time. However, the double headers are usually smaller fish.

I have never seen this done with walleyes, but have seen it twice with bass. My friend pulled in two bass on the same Rattlin' Rap two different times, a couple of years apart. The first time the fish were about 2 1/4 pounds each and the second time about 1 1/2 pounds each.

At pueblo res. in colorado I caught two smallmouth bass on the same top water popper. One on the front treble and one on the back.
At Big Mac in Nebraska while slabbing for eyes, if you see the gulls and water boiling you run over really quick and throw the slab with a doll fly a couple feet above the slab. Usually catch a white bass on the slab and a white bass on the doll fly.
I've never seen walleyes follow each other though. That's cool.
I can top it with 1 male on the hook and 4 others (a total of 5 in the net at one time): and I can explain it as well. This happens only when you are fishing actively spawning fish. The hooked male's thrashing on the hook is almost indentical to what a female does when she is trying to shake eggs out or spawn. This of course attracts other males as they think they are about to get their opportunity. They crowd the hook male and pay zero attetion to anything except keeping next to what they think is a spawnong female. So you net them all in one scoop. Incidently that is a true story about the 5 at once. Good luck.

Great day for you!!! Congrats!
I have only done it with bluegills...tandem inchworms on an ultralight. What fun! ;-) (your catch sounds like more fun though!)

When they are chasin each other like that juls you don't want to keep all those extras. You'd be done way too soon. And it is illegal. More fun to catch em. And at those times, it is no problem.

This is getting away from the question but...
Has anyone while jigging, hooked a walleye in the belly and thought they were about to catch the new State record...DOH!
Just wondering,

Two summers ago, my brother in law was landing a smaller walleye and a big northern came up and hit it as it surfaced. He lifted the walleye out of the water and the Northern didn't let go at first. He finally let go and fell into the water. When the walleye was lifted out of the water again, the northern hit it again and we netted them both.

Of course it's illegal, and I usually don't keep them anyway..;-)
But, it still sounds exciting! I have never seen that happen with walleye before..
Just release them and keep fishing! I just think it would be neat to experience something like that. WOW!

So that would be one legally caught fish and four poached fish, right? :)

I have caught 2 muskies on different occasions that same way. The first muskie hit a smallmouth bass that I was bringing in and the second muskie attacked a walleye. Neither fish would let go and I ended up netting everything. I still have pictures that I laugh at where I'm holding both fish before releasing the muskie. (the walleye and smallmouth didn't make it through the encounter).
Yes it is. but better yet is the fact that when this is happening, you will be seeing females coming to the surface with males in attendance. One of my most memorable moments occured with the 3 boys in tow, probably 10 years ago. They would have been 6, 8 & 10. We where in a situation with actively spawning fish and i was on the bow. I saw a huge female (probably a solid 36"er) come up about 50' away with 4 or 5 males right on her. She was throwing eggs because the males would stifen up and quiver when she did. She went down and come back up about 30' away and I tried to get the boys attention, but they missed it. I told them to come over to this side of the boat and watch, and they lined up along the gunnel, peering over the side just in time to see her come up again about 10' away, She'd thrash and the males would throw their heads back, shot their fins out and vibrate. It was awsome. Best close up I've ever had. Be in touch. hope to get to see you while your in my back yard.

What were you using? jig with a stinger, or a crankbait? I've never done that with walleye. white bass and have netted pike holding walleyes in their mouth.

Had this happen about five years ago. I was casting a large rapala when I latched onto about a 1.5 lb Eye. About 10 feet from the boat I saw a rush of water and my line went nuts. At the end of it all, i had a badly mangled walleye and a 15lb northern. I thought it was the weirdest thing I've ever seen, but reading this post, I guess it happens to others as well....(:
Few years ago my bro-in-law and I were fishing bull gills at Fox bay on Vermilion and both had fish on simultaneously -- turned out to be the same fish!

Been injoying the posts. I was in a active spawning area pitching jig and tail hooked minnow.
I don't know if it would have mattered what I was using. It just was a great time. The males had milk. Had it all over the place before I was done.

You people can be so provincial at times. This is a national walleye website so you must remember when you say things are illegal, that they may be illegal in Minn., but not in other states. Just a thought from down here in AZ. However, I am glad that this is Walleye Central where all children are above average and everyone on this site tells the truth or I would remember the saying, "you know how to tell if a fisherman is lying? Watch his (her) lips. If they are moving they are lying." Just kidding. ;-)

You know me Jim --don't dare me to top a story--too tempting--but I will pass---this time!

My wife and I were pulling cranks past a small inlet along the Missouri River here several years ago. This particular day the ticket was a fluorescent red wally diver and nothing else. I went to net her fish and when i lifted the net another walleye equal in size (19") surfaced right outside the net. Shoulda had those polarized glasses on maybe would have seen it in time to net both?? Interesting post!!

Ya, I want to see your post sometime. I know some of your unblievable stories because I have been witness to some. If your not counting fish or putting people on fish Saturday, maybe I should take you to that spot and I'll net a couple for you. What ya say?

Dang it! Was off on Sat--seen you were out with the big rig too, that will teach me to sleep in! I went out with "Little John" and it was tough, very tough! Should have got my but up, I had a feeling you were headed south again. The bite is still good on the Wild Rice by Fargo with big walleye up in the shallows, some were 29" and many 18" to 28" also. I was counting them insted of catching them on Sun.--figures? Thanks for the invite Jim--next time then--ok?
Several years ago my husband and I were fishing for walleye at Halan County Res. NE We had just purchased two new rapalas and were trolling. He caught a nice one that broke the line at the knot just as he got it to the boat, he was upset that he lost the brandnew lure and the nice fish. Seconds later I caught a nice one, and as I netted the fish I saw that the back treble on my lure had passed through the eye of the lure he had just lost and it was his lost fish I caught, a nice four pound walleye. this is unbelievable but true.

I had a friend tell a story where they caught a Kokanee, were reeling it in and somehow dropped the rod. Not long later they were trolling and hooked a fish. When they brought it to the boat they saw the lure was hooked to the reel of the previously lost rod/reel, and the fish was still at the other end!

A sleep at the wheel? How's next weekend look?
About 12 years ago I was fishing with my girlfriend (now my wife) and one of her friends - Lisa. We were fishing on Green Lake (big Green) in Green Lake, Wisconsin. We were working in 20' of water and casting Rattle Traps to a weed edge in about 10' of water picking up smallmouths. We were all fishing baitcasters and Lisa was new with this style of reel. Lisa went to make a cast and got a backlash and the lure snapped off the line and sailed towards the weed edge. After several hours working different spots around the lake we were back at the spot where the lure was lost. My girlfriend made a cast and got a nice backlash. After about 5 minutes of picking line she was back up and running. She reeled in her lure only to find that attached to her lure was the lure that Lisa broke off several hours earlier.

I caught a 6lb northern about 20 years ago that grabbed my red and white daredevil spoon in the right corner of his mouth. He had to strike it like that 'cause he had an identical spoon wedged in the left corner of his maw

Yesterday while patroling the shallows I got into thousands of Sunfish. As I continued through them the school grew as more sunnies swam in front of the boat. We were very shallow with thick reeds ten feet on the left and shore 10 feet on the right. The fish started to number in the thousands to tens of thousands. They were starting to panic as we ran out of water. Near the end the fish had no where to go and they completely paniced. Here there were about 20 northerns around 10lbs. each laying at the end of the finger of water. The sunnies started to jump from the water and even swim against the shore to avoid me and the Northerns. When the sunnies paniced the northerns went nuts. All of those northerns started slashing and grabbing panfish some as close as three feet from the boat. The most dramatic was when the northerns would grab sunnies out of the air then splash back into the water. For a minute or two it was absolutely crazy. I have never seen anything so exciting as this.

Had the same type of thing happen with a jig and stinger the fall of 98. Had a strike and started to reel in the fish(plural) and wound up with two eater sized saugers. Even got a photo. As far as fish striking fish already on the line my wife was reeling in a bluegill and caught a six pound largemouth - huge for the Maquoketa River!!!

This post is starting to remind me of the Ripley's Believe it or Not books :-).
-Last spring a guy's line broke at the bouncer, and, you guessed it, five minutes later he snagged the bouncer and got the 24" fish. It was during a friendly tournament too.
A few random unusual events I've experienced or witnessed:
-I once saw a small northern beach itself after it launched out of the water after a squirrel.
-Ever hook a great big snapping turtle? In this case it bit a Daredevle and it was the size of a manhole cover. Ugly, scary thing.
-One fish eating two different baits, on two different poles.
-a bit like the sunfish story, i once saw thousands and thousands of bullheads swiming at a 45 degree angle with their whiskers skimming the surface of the water.
Sorry about the long post. Walleyes don't open till mid May :'(

Can't top it...but have seen it a number of times. You catch a male and several others come up with it and you can net more than one at a time......fun eh?
