Can anyone let me know if you can get a larger boat (17+) in at the Birchdale access on the Rainy River without too many problems or is it impossible. Never been to the Rainy River but people have told me it is very difficult early in the spring with a bigger heavier boat. Looking for information on present conditions. 2/27/2000
go to the clementson resort page, he posts daily the ice conditions on the river. looking at it today, i would highly recommend not taking that large of a boat there. it is impossible to launch a large boat this time of year and even for some time, you must wait til the ice is away from the shoreline. hope this helps. i do not know his url, but under www.walleyehunter.com, there is a link.

The only problem for a larger boat would be shore ice. The middle part of the river opens long before the ice is away from shore. People unload their boats on the ice and then push them into the water. We launched a 16 foot lund rebel this way last year with the only casualty being a loose transducer. Hope that helps.
Even after shoreice is gone, the ramp can get very icy. I have seen a real mess at that landing with 4x4's slideing back into river. The small boats get drug up the ramp and then cranked on trailer. If it is warm enough, no problem.

Hi, this is Sandee and I do the updates on Clementson at www.clementsonresort.com There you can find the daily updates for the rainy river for spring. We do suggest small boats and motors as they have stated here, something that could be slid over shore ice. In a couple weeks you should be able to launch with no problems, as long as we don't get a bunch of snow to ice up the ramps. We are trying to get the county to keep the ramps clean.
