View Full Version : Buying boat and taking it across..
I need a little info on buying a boat in the states and bringing to Cananda. I work in the sates during the winter but spend my summers and have a house in Canada. What am I going to run across when I get to the border with this used boat I just purchased. Or should I have someone else deliver it and just leave it for me? I need help on this one. Thanks Help

I don't believe it is a problem at all. The only thing that comes to mind is it might not be able to be a current model year boat, meaning new or used at least year 2000 or older. I don't even think there's a duty. Not sure though on that. Call a canadian customs crossing and ask, they'll tell you I'm sure.
I guarantee that there will be excise tax due to someone! I have yet to see a boat sold at the duty free shop. I would urge you to check with your local tax authority to make sure you do not get yourself in a pickle. With the taxes your boat may not be such a great deal. Hopefully it is!!!
Here in Alberta you have to pay GST and have the trailer inspected just like importing a vehicle.

where will you be registering the boat? that may make all the difference.

yes indeed he may have to pay some sort of tax up there, be it provincial, federal or both. But he will not have to pay sales tax on it in the states so it's kind of a wash.

I take it that you are a Canadian citizen and working in the US under a work permit. If that is the case I am not sure if you can register the boat in the US. If you can register it in the US then when you cross the border you will probably be asked why you have a car with a licence plate from whatever Province you live in and a boat trailer with a State licence on it. You may then be forced to register it in Canada and pay the GST. The US and Canada have a free trade agreement which eliminates all duties if the boat and motor were manufactured in either country. There may also be a provincial sales tax and that would depend on which province you reside in, they all have different rules. Sooooo, check with Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA)and with your provincial sales tax office.

Federal and Provincial taxes for certain. If the boat is not up to Canadian standards you may have a problem as well getting it registered. It must m meet several standard benchmarks. I agree with the other posters.......go to the various agencies and find out for certain.
