Five of us went to Lake Erie on Monday January 1, 2001 and 3 of us had Vexilar units. We had lots of fish come to our lures, but very few were biters. We used several different lures, a gold Jig that was designed by Dave Genz caught a 7 lb & 3 Lb walleye. Also gold swedish Pimples caught 14 other eyes.
My Question is are there any suggestions to try to get the Trigger effect on the Walleye when you know they are right there, from the Vexilar and they even folllowed the lure up 4 ft higher before swimming away with out hitting the lure???
We tried all kinds of things, moving several times, trying differ size & color Swedish Pimples, trying several differ color jigs, trying jigging Rapallas with 3 minnows on the treble hook and several other things.
Any suggestions of how to trigger the Walleyes to bite????
Try renting an underwater camara. This should help you answer your own questions. I borrowed a friends this weekend and it was a great learning experience alnog with being entertaining.

I have a vexilar also, and experienced the same problem on monday. I have heard that the vexilar will spook the fish because of the sound waves it produces and receives and the fish can sense this, so if they are following then turn off the unit and see if the fish will strike...

I don't believe the vexlars sonar high frequency output it detectable by the fish, but because of the ability of you to see the fish swim up to the lure/bait you now know what has been going on in the past but could not see it. I have a vexlar and have seen lake trout do the same thing, they will swim up to it follow the jig up 5 feet but not bite, these are called nuetral fish. Yes something may trigger them to bite, it maybe a nod or jiggle, allot of time it is just holding the jig still for 30 seconds, it maybe smaller or bigger jigs, different colors, or maybe high explosives!!!!! That is why they call it fishing and not getting. The vexlar is a great tool and shows you what the fish are doing, I cannot stand it when my son or daughter steal it out of my hole and I have to fish "blind".
It sound's like you did everything you could do. You saw
what happens every day you fish. Not so till you got VEX.
i have that problem all the time to with perch and eyes with my vexilar, but those are just the fish that are off and won't bite, i highly doubt it would be the vexilars vibration, because the fish are following your bait all the way, if the vibrations scared it, then the fish wouldn't even come beneath your hole. u just have to try everything you did, and sometimes they just won't hit it, it's all in the presentation. if i just change from a minnow head to a wax worm sometimes, i catch fish right away, then i'll have to switch again to catch more. presentation..
