View Full Version : Southern walleye?
Just suposin' that I can convince the Kitchen that we ought to take a week off and find some open walleye water -- is there any credible winter walleye fishery within 500-1000 miles of Minneapolis that you could fish in a light windbreaker?

Try Fool Hollow or Show Low Lakes in Arizona. Nice and warm and the possibility of a 10+. It is a balmy 62 degrees there today!

Norfork Lake in Arkansas under normal conditons, but this has been one cold, icy, snowy winter. It's finally starting to warm up, however. I just moved here and am not an expert yet, but would trade you a trip here for a trip to MN next summer if you are interested. Wallys are good size, but the stripers are very aggressive, and it's sometimes tough to get a bait past them.
"Fool Hollow"? That ought to be the name of several places I fish!

Forget about the light jacket here in Arkansas. We've had coldest December in 17 years. Water temps are 40 or less. Daytime temps avgeraged 25 or less in Mountain Home area for more than 2 weeks, and January and February yet to come. So you should know what it takes to fish 40deg. or less water temps. Ice has formed in back of some coves.
There will be a tremendous shad kill this winter, and that means all the fish will be agressive this spring, looking for something to eat and taking what you throw at them.
Watch the weather channel and see what their forecasts are looking like, but then again it could turn cold after your get here.
You might want to consider Lake Ouachita also. Being 175 miles further south than Mountain Home does make a slight difference in your comfort. Oh and from February on into April the horses will be running at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, if you want some entertainment one day during your stay.
Good fishing.

John,
You are right on the money about the shad kill this winter meaning
good fishing in the spring. I anticipate good numbers as well as an
excellent chance of catching "Miss Piggy." This might be the year
for a new record walleye from AR. I have a couple of likely spots picked out and will be hitting them heavy.
