Wire gives you about a foot for every 10 feet. Lead core gives you about 1.33 feet for every 10 feet. (or 4 ' per color). The difference goes up as the speed goes up. There has got to be a speed at which they match up, but only for a narrow speed range. Wire is used more by summer time deep water guys, lead core is preferred by small boat (tournament style) fishermen who generally fishh slower. Hope this helps. Good luck.

One way to tie the leader to lead core is: First remove an inch or two of lead from inside the braid. Lay the end of the leader along side the braid and tie an overhand knot in the braid, (the end of the leader will be inside the knot). Tie the leader to the braid with a nail knot. You can tie the lead core to the backing the same way.

Another way of attaching a leader to lead core is to use a small barrel swivel between the two. Reduces any line twist and when your leader breaks off just tie on a new section of leader to your barrel swivel.

Try a Albright knot. Works great and is easy to tie. Maxima has a knot handbook out, you should be able to find one at a good tackle shop. This knot and many others are in the booklet. Good luck.
