Here's a problem we don't run into too often in southwest Ohio. We've had two weeks of good ice and it's starting to get chewed up pretty good. What, if anything, do you northern folks do to improve ice conditions?

Flood ice with water and wait for it to freeze. That's about all you can do, unless you own a Zamboni!

When I was a kid a neighbor of ours had a home made ice rink in his yard. He would clear off all the loose chips with a large squeegee (or push broom) and then shave off any rough spots with a straight bade shovel that he sharpened to have a woodworking chisel edge. He would then spray a series of consecutive light coats of water over the ice with a garden hose (the first coat being deep enough to fill in the ruts/skate grooves).
Remember to drain the hose after using.

If the pond is too far away to run hose maybe you can run power and drill a hole then an electric pump and hose with sprinkle.

Too far for electricity rent or buy a gas powered pump and hose and sprinkler these would be your options. Use a soaker sprinkler that puts water on fast and just a thin layer will work great or several thin layers.

Isn't it a bit warm to be freezing a layer of ice. Only coat it if it going to freeze the layer you put on. Be sure and drain everything when you are done or it will freeze and break from expansion.

Hope to help.

If you are on a lake use a Ice auger with the hole cut on a angle and keep it running to pump the water to reflood it. Be sure to dam the hole though or the water will drain back. Works great. Stand back a little or you will get wet, or use the gas to adjust the flow. Good luck....Kaz
