We're all in favor of getting rid of Lake Erie's gillnets. My local paper reported the State of Ohio is looking at a $600 million budget surplus. Anybody have any idea what it would take to pay off or buy out the Canadians?

gobie, the dow cant do anything about the canadians, thats federal, not state, if the netters dont stop, we may as well get what we can sport fishing. just think, a 17 mile net , how many eyes gets in there, compared to all the fish that we sportsfisherman catch. not much to compare is there? what we all have to do is get ahold of the congressmen, and complain there, not the state, and that goes for pa, and mich too. i know that a lot may disagree, but thats between the governments, not state to country, we just got to complain to the right people, and loudly too. and soon. i said my piece, sorry if i offended anyone, but thats how i feel too. good luck and good fishin.

I thought you couldn't hurt erie no matter what! Now you all want to shoot any bird that might eat a fish and put any commercial fisherman out of buisiness. God forbid anything messes with your weekend walleye slaughter. And no I ain't in PETA I fish and keep what I can eat all the time. Just sick of the hypocrocy.

Batgirl has no understanding of what is going on in Lake Erie and is only making a fool of herself with those comments. Think befor you speak and find out what is going on first! The Canadian Gill nets rape the lake. AS for putting commercial fisherman out of work, well how many local bait/tackle, restraunts, marina, boats sales, motels and other related busniesses are hurt and folding as we watch the Sport Fishing industy die. Over fishing Lake Erie Walleye hurts every one! THINK ABOUT IT!

Batgirl, you should try another website if you expect to get anywhere siding with the Canuck rapists. They are going to fish their gillnets until every last walleye (and probably every other fish species) is gone from Lake Erie. The only thing they're interested in is "PROFIT" and they're stealing from every sport fisherman on the entire lake-American and Canadian. As far as buying them out-I think we should "kick" them out instead and sink their boats!!! That iswhat they deserve!! Defend them all you want, but as far as I'm concerned,it's all Buffalo Chips!! As I said before,"Who won the Battle of Lake Erie Anyway??"

Some are fanatical, most aren't. It's apparent that you are not fully knowledgeable of this situation, nor am I, really. I'm trying to LEARN all that I can so that I may make schooled decisions as to what I may or may not do about it.

From what I have read and heard regarding this subject (and not just here), it appears that this is an extremely serious problem BUT I don't KNOW that, yet. Commercial netting/hunting can be devastating i.e. the whales, the buffalo, the kiwi, the Bald Eagle and on and on. Argue not from ignorance.

I agree w/ you Ranger. I sure would like to hear the "official" word from the Canadian government on this one. It would also be interesting to hear from a netter on their take of this situation. Does anyone know of any web sites or newspaper articles that could be researched on their perspective? Being well informed on the "other sides" view points always helps.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-00 AT 09:33AM (CST)[p]Sunshine,

Since yesterday I have had a post running on the "General Discussion" forum to try and get this info (or at least a starting place). Hasn't had too many hits.

This is NOT an "Ohio" issue, or a "Michigan" one, or any other state for that matter. This is a FEDERAL issue that requires our Congress, Senate, Judicial and Foriegn Affairs departments to get involved. We, as "state" representatives, might as well be spitting into the wind! What we NEED is Federal clout and that means getting our Senators and Congressional people moving on it, but, what is the REAL status of this????? How bad is it?? You can't argue or fight from ignorance. As you have said - I WANT TO K N O W BOTH SIDES of this so I don't get trapped when, and if, I chose to take up the fight. I want to know the ground I am standing on, and not stand on a soap box!!!

I dunno about you guyz, but i would gladly pay an extra 5 buck a year on my fishing licence, if it ment keepin those ****** nets outa the water. Maybe something like that could be established, u figure how many people buy Licences a year, well 5 bucks a person adds up, and we could do it forever too, and pay them ##### Canadians off.
