I am planning a trip to Sak. in the first week of August. Where area of the lake is usually best at this time, and we need help with lodging. We like something where we can do our own cooking, etc.

I would change your plans and come in the middle of July not Aug. Indian Hills would be a good choice I am not sure about cooking?

I'm pretty sure Indian Hills has housekeeping units available. I know NAWA and PWT guys have stayed there, even tho headquarters were in Garrison.

Just outside Garrison is Ft. Stevenson State Park, and I know they sometimes have campers available for rental. Check Garrison Chamber of Commerce. Otherwise, you'll probably need to go to the south shore outside Beulah or Hazen. Great country. Good luck.

I'd agree with the middle of july info. Dakota Waters resort is another option for cabins. I've never been there myself but I've heard its a good place.

I think the locals would prefer that you fish somewhere else, say Minnesota the land of 10,0000 lakes."There has to be a few fish left in some of them". Or go to Illinois largest state park they call it Wisconsin.

I've found the "locals" in both Dakotas to be among the most accommodating and friendly folks you'd ever want to meet anywhere. One of the attractions of the Dakotas for me is the people -- the "locals" as you call them.

I am one of the "Locals" :) My parents place is in the Dakota Waters Resort! Wish I was still there! July fishing is good and Dakota Waters Resort has both camping and cabins. The resort is located 16 miles north of Beulah ND. Great place to fish and a great place to grow up.

Visit fishingbuddy.com which is a local (ND) site out of Bismarck
There are some resorts mentioned and plenty of people at the site that may further help you with your plans.

I envy you in that you are planning way ahead. Good luck with your trip and thanks for the compliments on the "locals".

Thanks again. We have fished Oahe many times and have always found the locals to be very friendly and informative. It is one of the reasons we have returned several times.

Hey Chadk66 why don't you just give them your credit card numbers and experation dates while your at it.
The reason most of these folks are starting to come and fish in SD,ND, and MT is because they have overfished the waters in thier own states. I hope they put a slot limit on the lake really soon because after this PWT tourney is over with it's publicity the fish are going to need all the help they can get.

I saw first hand what a top 10 infisherman rateing for pike does just last spring. As we witnessed two suburbans full of drunk Minnesotans pulling very large enclosed trailers full of atv's augers and portable ice houses, fill cooler after cooler with egged up 10-20+ lb pike. After they invaded the small bay we were in. Oh yea and they were brought there by a "guide" from Garrison.

Sorry to hear such bitterness from you bob. I'm gonna assume that you reported this supposed incident to the authorities. I really find it kind of funny that you think lakes in other states are fished out. You must not get around much. And by the way, I think if you ask the south dakot game and fish about the situation on oahe, they'd be the first to tell you it certainly wasn't caused by a rod and reel. And on the issue of the PWT, I really don't believe that it is gonna have much impact on the picture. Just look through the last 4 years of pwt finishes and where they were and what is happening with they're fishery now. For example, just because they had a pwt tourney at fort peck last year doesn't mean everybody is gonna run out there and fish this year. Personally, if I was gonna drive a distance to fish it certainly would be lake erie. Also go tell the business owners in Garrison you don't want the pwt here this year. Your libal to get shot given the low water conditions threatening the marina and they're livelihoods.

You also might want to check water levels there is a chance of it being low which means the fishing will change to different areas of the lake. Bring checkbook have fun!!!!!!!

Such bitterness.......you must be getting out fished huh???
Bob

I'm glad you're the exception, the majority of the people I have ment from both N. and S. Dakota have been very nice and helpful. Almost as nice as Montana people ;-)

Bitter, you bet!
The way other fisherman act out on the lake, they should be ashamed of themselves and they might as well pay me a guide fee.
Because it never fails, you get out bright and early go to a little piece of structure you found the day before and start catching a few fish and here they come. From out of the blue, they must use good binoculars! And most of the time they just don't fish near you, no sir they get right on your butt. More than once I asked the other boat if they just wanted to hop in my boat. It's a good size lake, there is a ##### of alot more fish in it then the ones I am on. And you can move a couple miles and won't you know it, here they come. I have fished the lake for a long long time and every year this type of thing just get's worse. And with that pike deal what was there to report?
12 guys taking back to Minn. thier limit of big egged up pike?
All I know is there were alot of pike taken from us that day!
And you know why Ft. Pecks fishing is so incredible, they are blessed with lack of access!

i agree with people flocking to your spot, it always happens, you catch a fish then the boats just start piling in until there's 30+ boats fishing along side of you

It is a unfair to characterize fisherman from other states based on your experiences. This happens in every state and even in a lot of tournaments. They are guys in every circuit that are labeled boat chasers. I read a post not too long ago where someone called over the radio? about catching fish. He had a couple boats join him and they very grateful. This is fishing to me, sharing your knowledge and experience with others. This is exactly why WC has such a great group of knowledgable people. Willingness to learn from others and share when they can.

You should feel priveleged if anything. You apparently have the knowledge to catch these fish. I would personally never take a limit of egged up northerns, but if they weren't breaking the law, what is your problem? I am sure the ND DNR has the foresight to plan for these type of harvest and has the limits set for it.

I was watching the fishing shows this morning and was quite surprised. One segment was a couple of older fellows icefishing and the host told the audience " to find fish you start by finding other fisherman because they've obviously got something going". This other segment on a different show, two fellows in a boat went through the same senario. It's too bad they're teaching this method instead of encouraging people to learn to locate fish. All they seemed to be concerned with was the
"catching". Personally, I get the most satisfaction locating first then catching.

I agree with you. If I can't find my own fish that I would just quit the sport all together. Inevitably though, on some lakes you will find other anglers on some spots. But on Mille Lacs for instance, there huge mud flats which can accomodate hundreds of boats sometimes. Even then though, there is "the spot on the spot." If I can't find that, then time to find a new spot whether there is people there or not.

I also find it funny that the guy was ranting about people invading his spot. Now this may have happened, I wasn't there, but who is to say that they didn't have this spot plugged in their GPS and he just happened to be there. Food for thought!
