View Full Version : handheld GPS website
Ive watched all the posts regarding handheld GPS and am looking for a website that could help. I want a mapping unit Garmin12map, Lowrance Global map 100, or Magellan 330. Lowrance has the best website to see what the unit can do, Garmins is ok and Magellan's is lame. Are the Garmins maps like the ones shown at website, detail etc. their basemap is better than Magellan's? Is 2 megs enough memory in the Lowrance? Maps look more detailed in Lowrance based on what they show at website. Lowrance is least expensive. Magellan I can't tell what the detail would be with cd downloaded maps etc. Gander has the units but no cd's and etc for demoing. If anyone knows of a website that compares gps, or has a message board with people like Wc'ers that use gps, i'd like more input. Also does anyone know of aftermarket mapping software? I saw some from DeLorme, and that would be great if you could get the state or section of gazetter on a gps map. Where can a guy go and play with one and see what they can do? I would like to download a map of this area and look to see if things that I know are shown on the map, like forest roads I use, smaller lakes etc. Is this to much to ask before the purchase?
Thanks everyone,
Rob

Magellan 330M (marine) is coming very soon. 16 mega bytes.
What,what,what???
Magellan 330 marine comming soon?! Thats cool if its true. Where'd you hear that? Just yesterday I was kinda bummed about no marine maps for the 330. The Streets thing is very nice IMHO. But I want lakes man. I called Magellan - the lady says no not available for the 330. Then she wanted to transfer me to Technical engineering to talk "futures" with a techy. I'm thinkin' cool! After 10 minutes on hold - it went to global voice mail - bummer. If they come out with Marine 330 - I'll buy it!

Thanks for the good words about the page I put together last year at www.walleyesearchers.com/GPSlinks.html I still follow the GPS Bulletin Board mentioned in my page and the technology is quickly improving and getting less expensive every few months.
Before I would buy anything I would wait to see how the latest offerings from Garmin (3 new Etrex units - Venture, Legend, Vista)stack up against the others. Reviews on these should soon be available.
More info on them at
