I was curious as to what others do with oil injected motors. Does anyone else drain their oil reservior and start with fresh oil in the spring? Is it necessary? How long will a major brand motor oil be good for (shelf life)? Thanks to all repliers

I suspect that the answer is - years.
There are really no solvents that might evaporate in oil, as there is in gasoline.

However, there is one thing to consider.
After a few years of use, it is possible for contimanints to gather in the bottom of your injector tank. The engine manufacturer makes filters that normally come on the end of the pickup tube the oil tank. After 5 years of use, I changed boats and used the same engine, thus moved the injector tank. Although I knew of no reason for any contimanination, I did find a bit of build up in the filter, when I drained the tank and moved it to the other boat. So, I suspect that it wouldn't be a bad idea to drain the oil every 4-5 years, and put a new filter in the tank. Obviously make sure that the tank is well cleaned out, before putting on the new filter.

Typically, the filter comes with a new cork gasket for the top of the injector tank - which should be changed at the same time to prevent leaks.

Take care

p.s.
If you change brands or types of oil -- i.e. go from conventional oil, to a synthetic oil -- it is generally a good idea to drain the tank. Although the manufacturers all say that they oils will mix, why take a chance.
