I'm beginning to plan a family (wife, two teenaged boys) trip to the BWCA for this summer, and don't know where to start in terms of dates, etc. While fishing is always first in my mind, I'm willing to trade some fishing success for other amenities (e.g. bugs, weather) that will appeal to the family. We're probably looking at a week's duration, sometime during school vacation.

I checked the Walleye Central archives, and found that basically all of the outfitters in the Ely area are highly regarded. Do I just cast my lot with one of them in terms of picking out times and routes, or can someone point me to other resources where I help decide what would be best. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Gunflint Northwoods is an option. Between the two, I like the Gunflint area going in to Quetico more than Ely, altho both are terrific for a wilderness camping experience. If you could wait until into Sept, you will face a cooler but much more bug-free environment. June can be horrible unless you have an exceptionally high tolerance level for bugs.

Check Seagull Outfitters @ www.seagulloutfitters.com, they have a cabin on Saganaga, which I think is the better Walleye lake in the area. It does have a 25 hp limit, though.

Go to www.canoecountry.com. They have a nice message board there with knowledge of bwca and Quetico. There board is not nearly as nice as this though, the information is good. If I recall it was difficult to first find the message board but it is there.

Try www.ely.org and the Boundwater Journal www.timberbay.com for info - late summer is the best for temp and fewer bugs - but the permit process might dictate when and where you can make an entry into the BWCAW - permits go fast unless you are interested in a day trip only - Good Luck !

Oooooops - that should have been www.boundarywatersjournal.com - and they have a good link to navigating the permits process - but www.timberbay would give you some good info on canoe'ng in Birch Lake - although they are a resort and houseboat rental - very nice - and lots of folks canoe Birch Lake -
