FLIPPIN, Ark.--(BW SportsWire)--April 5, 2000--Due to the recent
scheduled roll-out of the World Championship Fishing (WCF) Series
sanctioned by B.A.S.S., combining racing and fishing, Ranger Boats
will cease all negotiations to renew their official B.A.S.S.
sponsorship. Although Ranger plans to fulfill all existing obligations
under their current agreement, they believe the WCF concept is not in
the best long-term interest of the sport or the safety and well-being
of the fishing community. As a result, Ranger has decided against
participating in the WCF or any similar activity.
Citing conflicts with the direction WCF is taking bass fishing,
Ranger President Randy Hopper said, "The WCF is an obvious change in
strategy by B.A.S.S. management. For over a quarter of a century,
Ranger and B.A.S.S. have shared philosophies with regard to the future
and growth of bass fishing. Working together, both have been
instrumental in the implementation and adoption of many key
initiatives that are commonplace today in promoting conservation and
boating safety. With WCF, emphasis has been taken off fishing and
placed on racing."
Case in point - the made-for-TV BASS Quest held last August on
Rend Lake in Illinois. Unlike ordinary tournaments, BASS Quest
combined traditional bass fishing with boat racing. In the racing
segment, anglers were timed as they raced their boats over an
unorthodox watercourse featuring long straight-aways and narrow
twists, turns, and switchbacks. In direct contradiction with WCF,
Ranger feels bass tournaments do not need to add racing to the format
to create more excitement, and does not agree with changing the
fundamentals of the sport for the sole reason of appealing to a larger
TV audience. Noted Hopper, "We feel there is nothing wrong with
thinking "outside the box" to grow the sport. We do, however, have a
problem with this concept that changes the essence of the sport. As
one angler stated, just imagine a golf tournament where 60% of one's
total score was based on a round of golf and 40% was based on racing a
modified golf cart through a planned race course. We believe fishing
in and of itself is exciting and is on the rise with its best days
ahead. We don't have anything against racing in its proper context, we
just feel there is no place for it in bass fishing. Fishing and
tournament fishing are wholesome sports, good for the family and good
for the country."
Ranger Vice President of Marketing, Bart Schad voiced his
concerns, saying, "Frankly, the WCF promotes unsafe boating practices.
Especially at risk are the young and impressionable. They see the pros
racing and performing these extreme maneuvers and think it's all right
for them to do likewise on open public waterways." Added Schad, "The
promotion of racing and the glamorizing of irresponsible driving is a
recipe for disaster."
Commented Hopper, "Ranger has always prided itself on
manufacturing the best quality fishing boats possible, cutting no
corners - with safety, stability and fishability in the forefront. We
have built our company on these principles and firmly believe that a
departure from our foundation to place an emphasis on racing would
prove to be a significant disservice and disappointment to our
customers. At Ranger, our customers come first."
Ranger Boats, headquartered in Flippin, Arkansas, is the nation's
largest manufacturer of premium fiberglass fishing boats, including a
line of more than 40 freshwater boats, and a popular saltwater series.
With emphasis on building the best boats in the world, Ranger Boats is
still building legends...one at a time.

Its nice to see that someone is sticking their neck out against this new format. I can see that if the racing format becomes popular, manufacturers are going to sacrifice fishability for speed. I like a fast boat, but won't sacrifice fishability for it. I'm glad a manufacturer is committed to providing a fishable boat, and not a racing boat.

Ranger has been and continues to be a class act. I am happy that Ranger has decided to distance themselves from this circus that is so-called a fishing tournament. I'm proud to be a Ranger owner.

That has to be one of the DUMBEST ideas I have ever heard.

Hats off to Ranger!!! I hope no other boat manufacturers trying to make a name for themselves fill the void. The last thing fishing needs is something as ridiculous as this.

I too am proud to be a Ranger owner.

Way to go Ranger. This new format has nothing to do with fishing. It will be OK until someone gets killed or seriously hurt.

I must agree, the sport of fishing is about fishing , the sport of racing is about racing and there is no room for this. Fishing is already coming under fire without our help! I now fish from the deck of a Skeeter but with this kind of commitment to our sport, Ranger should be applauded.Who knows when I get my next boat they may just have to call me Ranger Boy......Thanks for standing tall.

rangerboats should be applauded for their stand against this so called tournament. racing is racing and fishing is fishing!!!!!!!!! i don't see the need to show how well a pro can handle his boat. over the many years of all tourney's not many are recalled with a injury due to poor boat handling..
i agree we don't need this in the public's eye as being a fishing/racing sport.

This is yet another reason that I am proud to be a Ranger Fisherman. It makes no sense to me at all why BASS feels it has to jeapordize it's reputation just to try to get a few more viewers. Keep your principals high Ranger. We are behind this decision all the way.

Can you imagine -

Did you see the couple of guys that were tossed half out of their boats when the chine took a bite out of a sharp turn?

Can you imagine how cool a boat Mfr will think this race course idea is when one of their top O' the line boats and it's pro (both of which the Mfr has considerable time and money into) gets dashed on the rocks? :-(Not to mention if the boat goes careening wildly into the spectators.
:-0 Did you notice how close to the course thew crowd sits?:-(

I too applaud Ranger for this decision. While I also admit, to each his own. If you wanna race, then race. I personally want to spend more time fishing than running in circles. If I wanted to do that, I'd drive a Winston Cup car!:-)

I think boat companies like Ranger, can better show how well their boats handle by taping a rough water tournament. Talk about real life demonstaration of handling.

Time to go fishin';-)

Thank you Randy and Bart....Some of the fishermen are strange enough to deal with (LOL). But, as a Ranger dealer, I'm really glad I will still be dealing with just good fishermen....not racers.
Don't know much about racing...................?

Hats off to Mr. Wood and the Ranger people for their stand on this issue. I used to watch the Bassmasters show because I enjoy the thrill of competitive fishing, regardless of the fish species. Since the new format, I don't bother.

Let Ranger know how you feel. You can post comments on their webside: http://www.rangerboats.com/boats/ask_ranger.html or call them at (870) 453-2222.
I ordered a travel cover this morning, and asked to speak with someone about Ranger's "no racing as part of tournaments" stance. The (consumer relations) person I talked to asked where I had heard of their action. I mentioned the positive posts on Walleye Central, along with a couple other message boards.
This is a good opportunity to speak up FOR a company who has the fisherman's best interests at heart.

Attaboy Ranger!
