This is probably the worst time in recent history to start fishing the portage. It has been real tough this past August. Why, I don't know, except the weather has been very unstable. The weed edge never really developed this year, the water temp never warmed up and there seems to be a lot of baitfish. You would think the fish would get used to the east winds that blew all summer. I have been wondering if the fish are very shallow, but had no success trying this last weekend. Two weeks ago we nailed 'em during the middle of the day.

You might try husky jerks over the deep weeds, if you can find remaining weedbeds, such as near the red can I think you are referring to (Grosse point)?

Typically, September is very tough as well in my experience. Once the water temp is below 55 degrees, the fishing is better. So hope for a quick drop to lower temps. Email me if you like for more info.
Regards.

I'll be up in the gogebic area next week and wonder if you had any information on the bite around their. Depending on what's going on around their that week we will be headed to Little Bay De Noc the next week. Acually, the wife and I are real flexible and plan to go where ever the walleye's, steelies, salmon, or anything else that bites are cooperating! Thanks!
