I live in Iowa on the Racoon River. I fairly small river w/ several good sized creeks flowing inot it. Last year during spring i went to the nearest upstream dam on the river and saw a guy make on cast and catch a walleye. This year i have 12 foot aluminum boat w/ a 5.5 motor. It's gonna be a trip getting up the river but the snow and precip should help. When do you think the Walleye will start their movements upstream? Where should i try for them? Can i fish for them through the ice now? Any help is appretiated. Thanks.

i live in iowa also, near iowa city. walleyes will relate to spawning areas by now-dams and holes just below the dams, especially the areas of the hole out of direct current are good places to start. learn to be quiet in Your boat in these small rivers-walleyes spook in these small rivers with relatively clear winter water, and if they make a move to a safer place, chances are its somewhere you wont be able to find them like into a snag or under a cutbank--no where to hide if they think something is gonna get them! get a real good anchor you can unsnag or pull free of rebar or tree snags, heavliy enough to lock you down every time you drop it over. You can learn to anchor upstream and float quietly downstream close to where your gonna fish---stalk them--try it loud, then go somewhere else and be quiet- youll see the diff on a small river!
---im not too sure about the tributary action on the small rivers are often very eroded, and traditionally cannot support successful spawning- and i dont know how the stockers relate to them. they will head upstream looking for spawn sites, usually to the dams or bigger holes.
good luck
