View Full Version : Huron trolling
What is best to use between dipsy and spoon and how long a leader can someone recommend. Thanks will be back in Huron later this week.

I use heavy mono line(20+) at least 6' long. I tried fire line but it always would tange up. Definetly use fire line on reel to dipsey. Also, use a short 4"-6" metal leader or like between leader and spoon. I hate to see a heart get broken when a walleye cuts line just above the spoon. Believe me it has happened to me. I just use a 6' length of 17# Supertough Mono and some good bearing swivels.I have never had a fish cut my leader.(of course you can't use them for months and months)I really think using a wire leader would affect the action of the spoon. You can use a snubber at the dipsey side if you wish. Some do some don't.

I agree with Airwave. I also just use a quality mono leader about 6' long and no snubber. We set our drags pretty light also.
As for quality snaps......this is very important and dear to my heart. We got into a batch of bad snaps early this summer and lost some good fish because of them too. Just the other day I fished with a friend off Huron and had a nice one lost as a result of a poor quality snap. Shame on me for not checking it before sending it out.....Cost me a Reef Runner, a $1.00 bet, and I had to listen to someone brag the whole way home!
Our set up is 35 # super braid (Spectra fiber line) "Power Pro" to the Dipsys, the large Dipsy with the ring on, a snubber (we think it is a must with any no stretch line), 6' leader (jumper) with at least one QUALITY ball bearing snap swivel. The cheapy import ball bearing snap swivels are a lost BIG fish waiting to happen. We use 25# pure flourocarbon mono for jumpers. It's stiff and tuff. We've never had a fish bit off. Good luck.

Airwave-Sundance, I have had several eyes in the past 4 years snap my line just above the bait, I went to a metal leader(now there are more alternatives) and the breaks have dissapeared. When the hogs get hungry and visous, they attack like so.
I am not sure if a fire line type leader would prvent this(i did not use long enough because of tangle) but I had 20# line cut, just I said, right at the bait(5'10" of leader). That's when my heart was broken. Not only for not boating the fish, but to think that the spoon was still in its mouth.
Hope to hear from you all, I will be there Wed and Thur. Good fishing, Scott Scoutin'Sam

ETT - How long are the poles you use? I would think a snubber would be good with a 6 or 7 foot pole but not good with a 9 foot dipsy pole.

I have never had a problem with the leader breaking. Even when we fish for Steelies, I only use 14-17lb mono and no snubber. Like ETT, we do use one high quality ball bearing snap swivel on one end(spoon)and one high quality snap swivel on the other end.
However, I don't fish dipsies anywhere near the amount of time that ETT does. You won't go wrong with any of his programs or advice......they're tested quite frequently.
The rods I am using now are 8-1/2', but we've used snubbers on 10' rods. We troll as fast as the fish will allow, around 2.3 right now, and I believe that at that speed no rod can do what the snubbers do. Just my opinion.
Hey guys while we're talking about dipsey fishin i have a question that i always wondered about. That is what color of Dypsies are the best,Green Or chromes.Or doesnt it make much difference?? Kdog

Are you using cross lock at the spoon end or bearing swivel?I keep hearing the bearing swivel ruins action on the small spoons. Thanks for all info you share with us...Bob

You have to fish with what your comfortable with but I have never had a mono leader break where you are saying your does. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Lighten your drag and use a snubber. I use 8 1/2' poles and 10'poles with snubbers. Good snap swivels. I have fished this set up for years and even use the same set up for 30+ # Salmon and 20# Steelhead. After catching a fish that looks like it may have the hook in sorta deep I check the leader for frays. Just my set up. It works for me..Good Luck
For the smaller spoons and all the stick baits, we run the snap at the lure, for larger spoons and harnesses we run the BBswivel at the lure. With the 25# pure flourocarbon leaders it probably does not matter. Just the way we've always done it.

Keith do a search for dipsy color and you will get many answers. Some say all the colors work and some say paint them black.

wow what the heck did I do
Of course we realize that. We like fishing for fish who have taken up permanent residence. Those migratory schools just make things so much harder!:boxing:
