Drew,
You do not say if you jig, troll, use lindy rigs, bottom bounce or what. So I assume you want a single all purpose rod that could be used for all types of fishing, if there is such a thing. I'd recommend a 6'6" medium action graphite IM6 or IM7 with some superline like Berkley Whiplash. (to me superlines add sensitivity, and I don't like the course fireline!) For the price your looking for I'd think a Cabela's or Bass Pro rod would give about the best selection. Of these I have only used Cabela's so I would say a Cabela's Pro Guide IM6 for under $50(I used 1 of these for a couple years) , and either a fish eagle II or a IM7 Tourney Trail for under $70.
I think I would shy away from rods like the $25 Shakespear Intrepid, I saw one shatter last summer way too easily.
There have been lots of postings out on the message boards recently about rods, esp expensive rods. On those postings some people listed their favorites in all different price ranges and why they like them. Lots of good info, go check some of them out.
Happy Shopping

In the 50-70 dollar price range I would suggest the following rod- Fenwick HMX model HMXS70M-2. It's a 7' jigging rod, medium action, rated for 6 to 15 lb line. Toss some 3/8 fireline on your spinning reel and you have a versitile setup. My nephew got one and he uses it for jigging quite a bit. He also pulls #7 and #5 Shad Raps with it. It's a nice durable rod with good feel for the price. They retail at Cabelas for 64.95. Good luck fishing with what ever you decide on!!!

I would also take a look at the Berkley Lightning Rod Classic. IM7 graphite and retails for about $60. Nice rods. Good Luck! Fred

Bass Pro has their 2000 series Bionic Blades on clearance for $35 or $40 - they normally sell for twice that. The 6'6" in a ML or M would be a pretty versatile rod. They have good sensitivity too - especially when coupled with a superline.
If you fish from shore, consider the 7'er.
