View Full Version : spinning reels
I am looking for a spinning reel. Maybe a spinning rod and reel combo. Bass Pro Shops has a Pflueger combo listed for about $30. Has anyone had any experience with this combo? I would like to keep it under $50 to $60 if possible. Anyone have any suggestions? Light or medium action when ordering? I would like a combo versitile enough to jig or troll with.
This is a great web site for someone trying to learn about the wonderful sport of fishing.
Thank you in advance.

Best bet would be to check out www.cabelas.com
they have lots of good combos to choose from. I am usually pretty happy with the quality of Cabelas namebrand equipment.
When it comes to reels, you will get what you pay for. Get as many ball bearings as you can afford and don't get anything that doesn't have unlimited anti reverse or something like that.

The only spinning combo in that price range in Cabelas is the Cabelas Classic IMP/Quantum Hypercast Combo, for 59.99. I just bought that reel this spring, and it is an excellent reel for the money, very under-rated. Smooth, infinite anti-reverse, good drag, and the Hypercast function is great for casting, better than the old Shimano Quickfire trigger. I would personally go with the 7' rod in that combo.
Happy shopping!

I would suggest a QuantiumXR2 or XR3 list price of about $28. As for the rod Quantium 6ft. med. action is very versitile for what you need to do. I'm not sure if a combo is available or not.As for Quantium reels I love them I've got 7 of them. I had shimano reels and they just were not dureable enough. Quantium is also great on repairs and ordering parts. GOOD LUCK!!!!! EYE SLAYER

Hopefully Quantum has improved the Hypercast. Bought two initially because I thought the trigger with infinite anti-reverse would be great. I never liked the trigger reels from Diawa and Shimano since there was only one stop point on the bail.
Well the trigger worked very well as long as I used mono line. The anti-reverse is as good as any. The pin that holds the line would fray the super lines like spider-wire and fireline very bad. Managed to toss a few lures into the deep blue before I realized what was happening. Now I limit the reels to mono and they do a fine job.
Now I have purchased a Shimano stradic and get the great anti-reverse, a teriffic drag, and although there is no trigger, I really don't mind.

For a cheap great working reel, try one of those Mitchell Excellence models. They are around $30 and worth twice as much as far as I'm concerned. I've owned $100 reels that don't work as good as these. I have a place on a lake and fish everyday when the weather gets nice so my reels get heavy use. Bought my first Excellence 3 years ago. It's been rained on dozens of times and I've never lubed or maintained it in any way and it still works as good as the day it was new.

I agree. I have three Mitchel Excellence reels and have used them for everything from pan fish to Salmon. They are one of the most durable reels out there. I have some more expensive reels that have not given me the service my Mitchel's have. They are an excellent value. I have used them for 3 years and they look as good as the day I bought them. I fish quite often since I am retired and live on a lake.

Just don't buy a Quantum. I just bought my second Quantum. I returned it after trying it. I bought the new spinning reel with the titanium bail and magnetic bail release. I loved it until I fished with it. The drag malfunctioned. It would self tighten. My first Quantum was an expensive casting reel. The free spool mechanism would never work unless you first put your thumb on the spool and moved it backwards a bit. I relegated it to trolling duty. Twice bit is enough for me.
I ordered the $50 combo from bass pro. I think it was probably worth it. The rod was a 6.6 two piece which I put on a bobber rig. I put the reel on a med light rod for jigging and it works well. The spool is a little short and cuts down casting distance a bit, but for the money a good deal!

Have used my new Hyper-Cast twice so far, with Fireline casting cranks at night. Have not seen any signs of frayed line yet. I wonder if you have to be careful that you let go of the trigger completely? I could see a problem perhaps if you let the line snap over the metal pick-up. Don't know, but is working great for me so far.
