We are planning an early June trip to Leech Lake to fish. Previously, we have been fishing at Lac des Milles, in Ontario. I asked my brother if we could try Minnesota, instead. He heard there was good fishing at Leech Lake. However, he isn't really a fisherman. He goes once or twice a year, while I love to fish, and I wanted to bring the right lures. My son and I live in Arizona, and there are very few walleye caught here.So we don't know how or where to catch them, but we do know how to catch bass and crappie.
Could someone tell us where to stay, and tell us which lures are good in June? There will be 8 of us and we need 3 boats and lodging with a kitchen.
I know it's a long way off, but I don't want to waste my money on the wrong lures and waste vacation time fishing the wrong way... Please help......
Thanks
Tom Herman

Hi Tom. I spend most every weekend fishing Leech in the summer. June was probably the best month of the summer last year for Walleye. I split my time 50/50 for walleye and musky. It's a great lake (118,000 acres). I would recommend Red Wing Lodge on the Onigum Point road. Red Wing is on the big part of Leech. A good web-site for choices and information is www.leech-lake.com
Bait choices will range from live bait to cranks. I would favor the live bait.

A fine resort with a great location is Brindley's Harbor Resort. From there you can easily access Walker Bay, Pine Point, Stoney Point, the Narrows, Agency Bay, etc. It takes a big blow to keep you off the water entirely.
For those who do not fish often, rig them with Shad-raps and let them troll the long streches of 8 to 10 foot depths off the shorelines. You'll get some nice walleyes, the usual northerns, and probably some perch and rock bass.
Bait rigs are super on Leech in June (most years). Use a good map and get help from the resort. Both sides of Goose Island are good for rigging, as is Sucker Bay off First Duck Point to Second Duck Point. Just south of Sand Point in Walker Bay is a popular area for launches out of Walker. Watch where the launches fish -- they do pretty well, and depend on scoring for repeat customers. Of course, the best bet is to hire a guide.
Leech is a super lake. You've made a good choice.

My wife and I have been fishing the first week of June at
Leech the last 2 years. We stay at Maple Leaf Resort on Sucker
Bay and have been pleased with the accomodations and the fishing.
We've caught good numbers of walleyes drifting live bait in the bay. This is a very simple way to fish and has been effective for us. We have actually had no reason to even leave Sucker bay and have concentrated our efforts within it.Walleyes, perch, northern, rockbass, bluegill, and largrmouth are all present in the bay. We'll be up there again this year, look for a white Ranger bassboat with the guy netting fish for a pretty blonde, that will be me!

Tom, my wife and I have fished the first week in June at Leech
for the last 2 years and will be going back again this year as we have been happy with our accomodations and the fishing. We stay at Maple Leaf Resort on Sucker Bay.Walleyes, perch, northerns, rockbass, bluegills, and largemouth are all present in the bay. In fact, we have found no reason to even leave the bay and have concentrated our efforts within it. We have caught good numbers of walleyes drifting green jigs and live bait(minnows, leeches, and crawlers) rigs. While drifting you will catch not only 'eyes but northerns and jumbo perch as well. The rockbass are incredibly plentiful and aggressive, and they are a blast on light tackle. We usually donate them to the resort fish fry. We'll be up there June 2-9, just look for a white Ranger bassboat with the guy netting fish for the pretty blonde. That'll be me!

It appears Scott wanted you to know he fishes Sucker Bay with his wife. It's a good bay, but I certainly wouldn't go to a lake such as Leech and confine my fishing to just the one bay. Leech has much too much to offer to mitigate it in that way.

Sorry about that multiple post, that's embarrasing!I saw no evidence that my reply was going through. Hey ciscoe, thanks for pointing it out, but maybe you should look up "mitigate" in the dictionary, I thinks it's use here was a bit out of context!Heh heh!
The best way to learn a new lake is with a guide and I would suggest Chip Leer (chipleer@djam.com) that is his home lake.
thanks for taking the time to respond...
May I contact you in May for updates on lure choices ?
thanks, again
Tom
Thank you for responding... i appreciate your information...
Tom
Thanks so much for the information... Maybe we will see you, and the blonde...
Tom
Cisco,
Thanks for the response. You can be sure that we will work the entire lake. Maybe I contact you again in May for an update...
Thanks,
Tom
It's great the people are taking the time to answer. I really didn't expect information so quickly. I guess that's what they call Midwestern Hospitality... I grew up in Chicago
Thanks again,
Tom
Abe,
You are rightabout a guide. There are 8 of us relatives coming, so I'll check with them about the guide. I was just inquiring about general information, since I'm so far away.
Thank you...
Tom
Thanks again for your information...

The Walker welcome center (Chamber of Commerce) does a terrific job in supplying info to prospective visitors -- and, the Leech guides have an association and help each other out quite a bit. It's a great lake with lots of fine folks.

Don't need a dictionary to know the meaning of mitigate -- it is simply a condition that changes, in this case diminishes something, e.g. the lake; Leech. Nice try, however.

Chad is one of my grandsons. You didn't have anything to do with that. But, Al, I did vote for you and would do so again.
I,ve been reading a lot of messages on Walleye Central, and lots of people mention the multipost... What does it look like, and where do I get one ?

One little tip if you live bait fish up at Leech...which im sure you will...lime green or chartruese is one hot color. The bait shops gave me this tip and it really has worked well for me. Chartruese jigs tipped with small shiners fished on wind blown points early in the season...through early June i would say is a great way to catch walleyes there.
We trolled with floating Rapalas at Lac de Milles... and used flourescent yellow and greens and orange... Thanks for the good tip ...
Tom
Cisco,
Thanks... this is very good information
