My cousin and I were ice fishing up in Canada at Simcoe Lake for perch last weekend. The rigs we use are small 15" ice fishing rods, with 2# test line. It was quite an eventfull trip, because we both got unexpected catches. He caught an 8lb 7oz 34" northern, and I got a 13lb 34" Lake Trout, each one caught on the 2lb test line!
In discussing the catches, we were wondering what were the line-class records for fish like this. It would be to late for us to reg. anything, but I can't find any info on this on the web. I did fine the "All Tackle Records" at this link:

www.infoplease.com/ipsa/A0115316.html

but nothing on line-class. Anybody know where this info is avbl.?

Here's a link to the pic of the Laker:

Thanks for any info you can give me,
Bill Gunn

I don't believe you caught either one of those fish on the equipment you described. Nice try.

I beleive him. About 3 years ago I was fishing perch on white lake in Michigan and caught a 10 pound steelhead on 2 pound test. It took almost 15 minutes to land. I watched the fish hit. I told my partner it was a steely and he didn't beleive me untill he blew landing it 3 times.

The International Game Fish Association maintains all line-class and all-tackle records. The publish them annually in their Book Of World Record Game Fishes. I'll check mine when I get home tonight.

I don't know if they post the records listing online. IGFA's address is www.igfa.org.

The National Fishing Hall of Fame also maintains their own set of line class records. They have a site at

what little faith or skill you must possess.

on crappie rigs we regularily hook-up 30"+ northerns on red lake using this very lite tackle. it takes patience to keep them on and house mates willing to pull their lines for a while.

so cut the man some slack!

mbrandt,
Thanks for the info, I'll check out getting that book.
Doubtful,
I can understand that it's hard to believe, but it's true, and there were 3 witnesses there the entire 20 min. it took to get the Laker in. Had him to the hole 6 times, and it was a ball. Do you ice fish? You ought to give it a try. I go 2 or 3 times a week.

Sorry, didn't look at the site before I posted. I guess you have to buy the record book to see it. I thought it was on the site itself. If you have never been there in person, it's kind of a neat museum.
